Masters Student

Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom

I have recently graduated from Swansea University with a distinction in a Master of Science in Geographic Information Systems and Climate Change. My Master of Science dissertation focused on the sustainability of fresh produce, regarding food miles and organicity. While writing my final dissertation, I used Geographic Information Systems software and primary data collected to produce an infographic on a flyer to inform people on where their fresh produce had originated from, as well as how much waste could be eradicated by going packaging free.In my last semester at Swansea University, I followed the Climate Change Committee event series on ‘The Path to Net Zero’ and a module titled ‘Climate Science and Policy’ provided me with the opportunity to join weekly discussions about recent climate science events and issues, on zoom, with external stakeholders. One online discussion was with Andy Middleton, the founder, and director of the TYF (to your future) group. Andy actively encourages sustainable thinking and development within large businesses as well as individuals. Another online discussion included a guest speaker Heidi Smith, who is the head of sustainability at Swansea University. The topic discussed was Swansea University’s path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2035. I also presented information outlining the SPECIFIC project on Swansea University’s Bay Campus, where ‘active buildings’ are designed to produce more energy than they consume annually through a range of renewable and sustainable energy sources, addressing climate change using innovative solutions to combat these issues. This involved research and appropriate representation of sustainable management delivered to a large group of students and external stakeholders. This research has given me a greater understanding of renewable energies such as solar thermal, photovoltaics, air-source heat pumps, hydroelectricity, and wind turbines.

Student Demonstrator

Swansea, United Kingdom

As part of my Student Demonstrator role with the University, I worked alongside the lectures of a module called ‘Sustainability and the human impact’, assisting individuals with report writing, data sourcing, and referencing on the topic of the millennium sustainable goals. This gave me fresh, up-to-date knowledge and ideas on the impact of climate change. This role, together with my undergraduate degree and Master of Science has cemented my desire to develop a career in sustainability and environmental science.

Physical Geographer

Sikkim, India

Interdisciplinary Field Trip to the Indian Himalayas, working with Human Geographers, Biologists, and Zoologists. In 2019, I was accepted into the interdisciplinary field trip to Sikkim in the Indian Himalayas. This trip was very prestigious, with around 100 students from Geography applying and only 10 accepted. While in Sikkim, I worked on a group project alongside geographers, biologists, and zoologists which focused on the issue of ecotourism, and the problem Sikkim had with maintaining and enhancing biodiversity within their tourism sites. We visited a hydroelectric dam and many locations where they harvested the power of the sun through solar panels. I also worked on an individual project which studied altitudinal variations within plant species.
