I am a research meteorologist with 30+ years of expertise in applied meteorology including forecast verification, remote sensing, and ensemble prediction. I am currently heading up an initiative in the Bureau of Meteorology to improve the way we measure, use and communicate information about the quality of our weather forecasts. My team develops forecast verification methods and software that supports the Bureau's meteorologists to improve their forecast accuracy and efficiency. Within the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) I am co-leading a project to explore value chain approaches to evaluate warnings for high impact weather, a collaboration between physical and social scientists. I enjoy working in multidisciplinary teams to develop and improve forecasts and warnings for hazardous weather. Following the deadly 2016 thunderstorm asthma event in Melbourne I was part of a team that delivered the world's first forecasting system for epidemic thunderstorm asthma. Other collaborations include forecast systems for bushfire smoke, heatwave, and flooding rain. I enjoy mentoring younger scientists and have co-supervised five PhDs.
