Elizabeth "Beth" Gill (she/her/hers) received a BA in Sociology from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas; an MA in Medical Sociology from Yale University; and a Ph.D. in Organizational/Historical Comparative Sociology from the University of Texas, Austin. Her higher education journey began at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio and has continued uninterrupted, with increasing intensity and engagement, to include professorial, scholarly, and administrative duties at Randolph-Macon College; a yearlong placement at DePaul University as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow service as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Canisius College and now Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the Faculty at Austin College. During my twenty-year tenure at R-MC, my course offerings included disciplinary, interdisciplinary, experiential, travel, and research-based experiences, for which I won several teaching awards. In her current position at Austin College, she leads the Academic Affairs division of the college, supervising numerous direct reports, including three divisional deans; academic departments in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences; intradisciplinary and international programs; and academic support programs that serve the entire community (e.g., the registrar’s office, institutional research, library, information technology, student success, career services, faculty development center, mentorship directors, first-year experience program, and academic assessment). Additionally, her training as a sociologist and experience as a faculty member has enabled her to understand the disciplinary nuances of disparate academic programs, envision possible programmatic opportunities, and work collaboratively with colleagues to develop successful, forward-thinking, student-centered programs and applied learning experiences. Professionally, she has authored and co-authored numerous articles, edited book chapters, and made national and international presentations on death and dying, the family, human rights, mindfulness and social justice, pragmatism, and military suicide, all of which examine the effects of the organizational context upon an individual’s life world. Her current work is directed toward developing a sociological model of human rights, using military suicide as an empirical touchstone, based on contemplative practices designed to accommodate agency, organizations, and diversity while encouraging and propagating creative alternatives within structured bureaucratic environments.
