I am still involved in providing departmental training and development opportunities for all 750 of UCLA Recreation’s student employees; however, I also earned a promotion in receiving my new job as Assistant Manager of the Student Activities Center. This facility is located across from the John Wooden Center which is our campus gym facility. I had the opportunity to also help run that facility as building manager while they were in the hiring process. This dual role allowed me to run two student staffs of about 22 students each and they built relations and a partnership never existent before due to the unique model in which we were functioning during the hiring process. Even though I have now moved back to my role in SAC, we have continued to capitalize on opportunities to cross train our employees in multi- venue operations to benefit them. I work hard with my 3 student coordinators in SAC to build not only hard skills like maintaining the building’s operations (plumbing, painting, etc.), power washing, event set up etc., but also soft skills like problem solving, decision making, self-reflection and taking initiative (transferable skills). I am lucky to take part in assisting the oversight of a building that houses over 11 tenants, student groups, advocating for outreach and the support of those student organizations on campus. We do event set up and management for events in our basketball gym, conference rooms and full length soccer field. We also manage another pool area on campus and I have been working on a customer service efficient renovation project with our facility team for that building as well. I am excited to come to work everyday and although my background is classroom teaching, I am finding this the classroom outside the classroom. I help students to prepare for graduate school and future employment. The time they spend in my office reviewing cover letters, networking strategies or resumes are some of the favorite times of my day.

As the training and development coordinator my responsibilities vary from helping plan staff meetings for the professional staff to creating student recognition/ incentive programs for our student employees. It is my job to help our students maximize their employment time here and gain transferable skills to take out into the real world and their career of choice. I have set up and lesson planned numerous workshops, orientations, online trainings and helped academic advise for countless undergraduates. Sometimes, it becomes my job to simply listen to the needs of our professional staff and our students to better help develop tools with which to equip them in their everyday journey to self-reflection and development.

At New Academy, I was a K-5 Resource Special Education teacher, but I was responsible for supporting a mixed structure combining pull out methods as well as co-teaching 4th grade reading and math. I learned to grade level plan with the 4th grade, but had to master all standards due to the nature of my pull out students. I again was responsible for legal documentation and learning to use the online system supported by LAUSD. I was also an adviser and coach in the drama club and after school basketball club open to 3rd grade and above.

As a teacher in Atlanta, GA I was part of the Teach for America program and was teaching K-5 Special Education reading and math to a caseload of about 30 children. It was a resource setting where the students were pulled out of class to have focused and differentiated learning time in my classroom. I tracked their progress with the Developmental Reading Assessment and Benchmark assessments of varied disciplines seeing as how some of my students had needs which a multiple choice test simply would not meet. I was responsible for writing legal documents, evaluations and IEP's.
