As Development Support Manager I lead Hub Cymru Africa’s development support, mentorship and training activities across South Wales. They ensure that individuals and groups within the Wales Africa sector access a programme of training, learning and information sharing events throughout Wales linked to Sustainable Development Goals and the Future Generations Act. I lead on the provision of development support for individual groups and organisations and work with them to trouble shoot challenges in programme design, implementation, fundraising and other mutually identified areas and develop action plans together, including identifying any training needs or areas for further support.I help identify sources of funding relevant to members of the Wales Africa community and encourage and support them to apply for funding, including through UK funding streams from DFID, Big Lottery and Comic Relief, as well as private foundations and trusts.I coordinate and lead regional shared learning events, bringing together groups to share experiences.

The Wales for Africa Health Links Network supports institutional partnerships between Wales and Sub Saharan Africa which deliver health projects and contribute to knowledge and skills development of health practitioners in Wales.As Development Officer offered development support to the health links on a number of levels. As well as helping the board of this newly registered charity to develop a strategy and vision for the network I also helped the individual links to strengthen and grow. I did this through the provision of advice, tailored capacity building support and training. I also helped links to develop needs assessment and planning tools and strengthen their monitoring and evaluation approaches. I facilitated networking events, collaborative initiatives and skills sharing between members of the Network, identified further training needs and developed a program to fill any gaps. I advised on sources of funding, specifically on applications to the Welsh Government Wales for Africa Program Grants Fund. I also helped the network members to collaborate and share with other actors in the sector such as the International Health Coordination Centre, Wales Africa Community Links, Fairtrade Wales and The Wales International Development Hub.

I was the key point of contact for all Country Directors and assisted them in all aspects of programme management.I was responsible for Risk Management across the organisation, ensuring a clear framework was in place to actively manage organisational risks, to manage and update this framework and to share it with Trustees and colleagues alike.I jointly led a review of our information management systems and processes to ensure staff across the organisation have the systems in place to effectively manage and monitor projects on the ground. When in place this will help to leverage more funding and better monitor impact.I was responsible for liaising with country programme offices to set up trips for the patron and other influential people, leading on all logistical and planning aspects.I built relationships with several major donors and nurturing their further engagement in the charity

I seized the opportunity to take up this post to develop my Grants experience with a view to a permanent career change in the near future.Delivered a full analysis of existing academic literature to Consultants, the International Grants Learning Manager and individual Programme Managers on subjects such as; Child Domestic Workers, Conflict and Education, Conflict and Livelihoods, Urban Slums and Government and HIV/AIDS and Education.As part of this, I took the initiative to create a rating system to indicate to most useful documents and analysed gaps in learning with recommendations for areas for further research. I presented my findings & recommendations to the Consultants, International Grants Learning Manager and Programme Managers with the result that the majority of my suggestions were implemented. This enabled the consultants to conduct full and informative programme reviews and has led to improvements in both Comic Relief's learning and in learning across the sector.To conduct the scoping studies I had to communicate closely with project partners and other key informants to gain valuable insight from them on existing practices and knowledge gained and also fed back to them on our findings. I worked closely with the Consultants on the programme reviews and assisted in the planning and facilitation of subsequent workshops including guiding group discussions and documenting the outcomes.

Gulu And Kitgum, Uganda

In this challenging role in a remote region of Northern Uganda I coordinated with government, NGO partners and schools to conduct a large Information, Education & Communications campaign to encourage war affected youth in to access HIV counselling and testing and to avoid risky sexual behaviour.To do this I worked extensively in the IDP camps in Kitgum and Gulu districts conducting needs assessments, administering to the counselling and testing services and performing monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment activities.I worked closely with the IEC Manager to coordinate the 'Know Your Status' Campaign including the design and distribution of communications materials such as newsletters, posters, brochures, stickers, radio ads and billboards. To do this I participated in the planning, budgeting and management of the IEC campaign.I assisted the team in the formation of support groups for people living positively with HIV and worked closely with local Community Based Organisations to conduct workshops in schools, markets and prisons on abstinence, being faithful and the use of condoms.I led on establishing organization protocols for coordination between projects, staff, and partners and helped build capacity of local staff in the areas of communications, logistics and IT.I was responsible for submitting regular reports on our activities to the donors and also assisted the team in the development and submission of funding proposals to additional donors.
