About Beth Last
Human teeth. Rat tendons. Additive manufactured (AM) polymers and metallic hierarchical structures. Ancient Mayan paint chips. AM NiTi shape memory alloys. Mg-Ti thin films. This small list is only a fraction of the materials hat I have characterized over the past 10+ years. Through my Ph.D. research in AM NiTi to my current positions with the Materials Characterization Lab at Penn State University and as the Research Core Facilities Coordinator at Penn State Behrend, I work extensively with a variety of instruments that can characterize many different properties, behaviors, and classes of materials. I've worked with undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and industry clients to delve into understanding why their material behaves a certain way. My areas of expertise are in X-ray diffraction (XRD), (thermo)mechanical characterization, and metallic materials, though I have worked with an astounding wide array of materials - and am always interested in exploring more and learning about why materials behave the way they do.
