l love engaging with new ideas and finding creative and exciting ways to teach. Since moving to London in 2013, I have leveraged my training and experience to create WonderWorld Science, an after-school and half-term science program that teaches primary science workshops with a "tinkering" curriculum aimed at giving students the opportunity to think and work like scientists. Our tinkering activities give students a structure within which to find creative solutions and tangible success, improving their science skills by practicing their abilities to think critically, making evidence-based decisions, and encountering failure as a part of the learning process. Some workshops have students make robots without kits while others focus on iterative design of paper airplanes, marble mazes, and illuminated greeting cards.Having worked as the educational director of a non for profit in London, my experience with teaching science in the UK is that significant work could be done to help shift the emphasis from fact memorization to a more creative, engaging, and experiential one, hence WonderWorld Science. I believe an important piece of this shift is the allowance and space for creativity of thought and expression within the structure of curriculum. What I see lacking in science education right now is creativity. Rigid though its tenets often seem, real-life science applications happen in the creative space between limitations.
