My background with animals starts with growing up on a small beef farm. As I got older, horses, pigs, goats, chickens, and ducks began showing up around the property. The more species that were collected, the deeper I dove into raising happy, healthy, and productive animals. Recently, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science with an emphasis in meat animals. While in school, I worked for Extension as educational support for Pierce County’s 4-H program, as well as with the Humane Handling Institute. At Pierce County, I built valuable relationships with families and volunteers in addition to executing various programs. Within the Humane Handling Institute, I assisted in putting on workshops for slaughterhouse employees. There, I had the opportunity to learn about humane handling techniques within cattle, swine, goats, and sheep, as well as the importance of captive bolt maintenance. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and going for walks while listening to a podcast.

Within this position, I assisted with 2-day workshops teaching the proper use and maintenance of captive bolt guns and humane animal handling practices. I also had the opportunity to practice humane handling methods in moving livestock in preparation for workshops. Lastly, my favorite task in this position was creating infographic materials based on animal welfare research to communicate applicable results to slaughterhouse employees.

During my time in this position, I communicated with Extension staff, verbally and via email, to reach 4-H program goals and fostered positive relationships with Pierce County 4-H’s network of 700 volunteers, members, and stakeholders. I was also challenged to adapt to new challenges and practice problem-solving within programming, volunteer management, and youth protection situations. One of the most rewarding tasks I had was identifying the needs of volunteers through outreach and communication with club leaders to create high-quality and accessible resources. Lastly, I had the opportunity to develop county-wide programming and evaluate its success based on written and verbal feedback.
