During my practicum placement, I provided on-site and online psychotherapy for individuals during the perinatal period. I addressed issues such as: postpartum depression as experienced by all genders, birth trauma, abortion, stillbirth, Borderline Personality Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, addiction, sex work, insecure housing, shifting family dynamics, sexual intimacy, gender affirmation, and 2SLGBTQ+ concerns. I also co-facilitated two Ontario-wide, virtual 2SLGBTQ+ parenting groups. I became familiar with Jane software, clinical notation, group and individual supervision expectations, and the challenges of participating in a grassroots community organization.

Revolutionary Doula Training operates within an anti-oppression framework that believes that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences are feminist, reproductive justice, and social justice issues. It is a training program that is 2SLGBTQ + positive and acknowledges that most doula trainings and prenatal classes are taught from a heteronormative perspective that can be alienating…and we seek to smash that paradigm. Revolutionary Doula Training is trans- inclusive, and welcomes people across the gender spectrum. The voices of all communities and cultures are invited, and will be honoured. Revolutionary Doulas are allies – we acknowledge that there are times for us to speak, and times for us to listen. This training strives to be accessible to people of all physical abilities and financial situations. Experienced doulas are welcome to take this program to fill in any skill-gaps from their own certification experience, to network, and to experience other perspectives of learning.Revolutionary Doula Training is based on complementary and integrative approaches, bridging issues of doula work/birth work/the childbearing process with the refinement of professional skills, and issues of social justice. The goal is to create confident, competent doulas who possess the skills to support their clients holistically – within appropriate cultural and social contexts. Each educational component is meant to enhance the basic skills a doula receives during their initial two-day training workshop so that Revolutionary Doulas are doulas who are serve their clients on a superior level.

Responsibilities included: being on-call to provide physical, emotional, and informationalsupports during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period in and out of hospital,as well as medical procedures, including, but not limited to: abortions, ultrasounds,pelvic examinations, breast/chest examinations; assisting with infant feeding(breastfeeding/chestfeeding/bottle feeding); demonstrating well-baby care; providingpalliative care for medically fragile infants; attending and supporting miscarriages and stillbirths; referring to appropriate community/cultural supports; interacting withmedical professionals such as obstetricians/gynaecologists, midwives, nurses,anaesthesiologists, etc. Clientele consists largely of marginalized communities –racialized individuals, low-income families, 2SLGBTQ+ parents, substance-involvedpeople, teenage/young parents, new Canadians/refugees/undocumented citizens, etc.

Responsibilities included: creating and implementing holistic wellness programmingwith a focus on physical, social, environmental, and spiritual health for marginalizedgirls, transgender/non-binary, and Two Spirit youth ages 8-14 in person and virtually(inside and outside of schools), securing guest facilitation, mentoring volunteers ages15-18, writing grant proposals and grant reports, participating in funding initiatives,networking and collaborating with other social profits, participating in the creation ofmedia content, designing manuals on social justice topics (including 2SLGBTQA+allyship, anti-racism, transformative justice, and feminism), inclusivity training forcommunity partners, engaging in regular committee meetings, maintaining The W(YWCA Cambridge’s programming space), adhering and adapting to changing Covid-19policies

During my time with House of Friendship/Alcontrol, I designed and delivered a series of three-hour workshops exploring spoken word poetry, creative writing, and healing from trauma with substance-involved women in a residential treatment centre. I educated myself with House of Friendship’s multi-faceted approach to assisting women on their healing journeys, and interacted with various staff and community members with concerns regarding residents’ well-being and their achievements in workshops.

The K-W Doula Collective is a group of practicing, highly-trained and experienced labour and postpartum doulas serving Kitchener, Waterloo and surrounding areas. We recognize that inviting a doula into your family during one of the most precious times of your life is not only a financial investment, but an emotional investment as well. We know that it can be time-consuming and confusing to locate a selection of active doulas to interview, so we seek to streamline the search process for you by providing a single location where you can find a community of doulas who adhere to particular guidelines and codes of conduct. While each member of our collective owns her own business and brings her own exceptional skills to her doula practice, we are all united by the desire to serve our clients with professionalism, thoroughness, and love.

I created and designed the doula training curricula for The Nesting Instinct's original doula training program, instructed and mentored new doulas, offered a variety of workshops and weekly community groups, and provided both labour and postpartum doula services.
