Beth Neff (b. 1959) is an urban planner, regenerative agriculture activist, writer, and cooperative organizer. After graduating with dual honors degrees in journalism and anthropology from the University of Michigan, Neff worked as the miller of an 1830s working grist mill, grinding flour and providing educational tours and programming. After the birth of her first daughter, Neff focused full time on organic vegetable farming. She raised dairy goats and sold produce through area food coops, restaurants, and farmers markets. Neff took on the management of her local storefront food co-op’s produce department and, over the course of nearly two decades, built a network of several dozen mostly Amish organic producers to supply fruits and vegetables to the co-op.In 1996, Neff founded the not-for profit Community Sustainability Project, Inc. CSP operated a community-owned farm, followed by a vendor-owned, indoor, year-round farmers market. The market was the recipient of both local and national grant support, particularly for its widely-recognized subsidized CSA program. CSP, Inc. also hosted an annual sustainability conference for regional leaders, planners, civil servants, and activists that evolved into Neff’s collaboration with the City of Goshen (IN) to write its Ten-Year Comprehensive Master Plan, a three-year project that resulted in a 350-page document that continues to guide the city’s growth and development. Neff subsequently provided planning consultation and feasibility studies to the City of Elkhart (IN), a number of neighborhood organizations, and local and regional food and health coalitions. She also led permaculture design courses and workshops for park programs, college environmental education programs, and for various youth and adult organizations and worked part-time as a freelance journalist, covering mostly local government. After two years as a youth librarian, Neff moved to St. Louis in the fall of 2017 and purchased a vacant two-story, mixed-use building with a commercial kitchen and defunct diner. In collaboration with her daughter and others, she renovated the three upstairs apartments for occupancy and made the necessary updates to re-license the kitchen. In 2019, the not-for-profit, Spark for the Arts, Inc., opened as MARSH, home to a multi-stakeholder cooperative, including a workers cooperative, sliding scale cooperative grocery store, a network of neighborhood farm plots, and a curated social arts practices/performance space. Neff is also the author of the young adult novel, Getting Somewhere (Viking/Penguin, 2012).
