Beth Nelson is from a small town in Nebraska with a big heart for kids and big ideas for moving schools forward in their practices. Beth’s educational experience extends over 30 years in public schools. Her career began in a mid-sized school as a Family and Consumer Science teacher. It is in that position where she learned the connection between student success and healthy student/teacher relationships. As the only FCS teacher in her school, she grew her understanding and pedagogy using Marzano’s research. In her work, she discovered the power of quality curriculum and effective teaching strategies to meet the needs of students. This fueled her desire to become more impactful for students so she progressed her career in leadership and administrative positions. She served as an Activities Director and Secondary Principal. During that time, she was awarded Nebraska’s Outstanding New Principal of the Year and Region III High School Principal of the Year. Currently Beth serves as a district administrator for Norfolk Public Schools, a Class A school district leading curriculum, instruction and assessment. Beth has led her current district through continuous improvement by advocating for research-based educational practices at all levels. She’s passionate about engaging educators in conversations to create mind shifts that support the components of high reliable education for all students. Beth has been leading and training educators in her current district through the first four levels of High Reliability Schools since 2013. She has a strong understanding of the power of professional learning communities, guaranteed and viable curriculum, effective teaching in every classroom and standards-based grading. Her most recent project includes leading strategic planning to embed RTI, Response to Intervention systems throughout the district. Outside of education work, Beth enjoys playing with her grandchildren. On weekends in warm months, you might find her floating on the lake or landscaping. In cool months, you might find her antiquing, attending craft shows, reading or sewing. Although she was born and raised on a farm and has spent most of her life living on a farm, her husband will be the first to say she’s not very farmlike and therefore not super helpful with raising pigs or putting up hay. Her life on the farm contains countless stories that may give you a little comic relief.
