My favorite part of my job is advising STEM students to aid them in their journey from high school and throughout their college experience. I would like to pivot into a new position focused on increasing college access and success for underrepresented, first generation and limited-income students. Over my 20-year faculty career, as an academic advisor, and Director of two college transition programs, I have a unique insight into the college admissions process, navigating the campus environment, and the challenges students face.Currently as the Director of a scholars living-learning program, I support a diverse group of approximately 150 first and second year students. This includes meeting with them one-on-one to address their questions and concerns about college and their career and life goals. We have a weekly colloquium where I facilitate discussions on STEM topics, professional development, and diversity, equity and inclusion. Our program also facilitates local field trips and domestic and international travel-study trips. On these excursions I get to know the students even better and have in depth conversations about their futures.
