Fine Art Instructor
Art Specialist
I teach fine art to general education and mainstreamed students in grades 9-12 at a magnet center which houses six separate high schools- Talented and Gifted, Science, Engineering and Math, Health Professions, Law Magnet, Education and Social Services and the Business and Management Magnet. My course load has included Art I, Art II Drawing, AP 2D Design, AP 2D Studio Art and AP 3D Design. I’m passionate about guiding students of all experience levels in developing their confidence and ability to articulate about art on visual, verbal and written levels, as evidenced by consistently high test scores my students receive on the district’s standardized tests. My goal is to encourage higher order thinking as it pertains to visual art, in addition to teaching them to value creativity and the necessity of art and visual expression in their own lives and their contributions as artists in the culture at large. I thrive on discovering my students’ learning styles and building community among diverse student populations in my classroom. Being a practicing artist has enabled me to provide my students the valuable perspective of entrepreneurship, and I have had the privilege to help encourage and establish the mindset that art is a practical, valuable and viable career option. In addition to preparing students for AP Portfolio, I also promote student participation in competitions and other opportunities in which to showcase their work such as Youth Art Month, the Congressional Art Shows, and local and national opportunities including scholarships in art and hosting college visits.
