Beth Rose, MPA, is the Co-Founder and Board Treasurer of the Alaska Eating Disorders Alliance (AKEDA), a behavioral health 501c3 non-profit (www.akeatingdisordersalliance.org). Beth sought to form this nonprofit after seeing family and friends struggle with this life-threatening illness without sufficient support in Alaska. Because eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any mental illness after opioid addiction, she knew this nonprofit would save lives. In partnership with Co-Founder Jenny Loudon, AKEDA offers a monthly Family/Friends support group, a weekly adult support group, and a provider consultation group. The organization provides educational programming on eating disorders for medical and mental health providers, promotes body confidence and eating disorder prevention, engages in advocacy on the state and national level, and promotes resources and recovery through the website and social media. AKEDA is governed by a board that includes a family practice doctor, psychiatrist, therapists, researcher, dietitian, advanced nurse practitioner, financial advisor, nonprofit executive, and the two co-founders.Beth sees eating disorders as a social justice issue that involves access to health care, improved understanding of this disease beyond the media stereotypes, treatment for underdiagnosed/ marginalized populations, and promoting an understanding of Health at Every Size and radical self love for every body. Beth brings more than 25 years of fund development, non-profit management, public relations and strategic planning skills to her positions. As the VP of Philanthropy/External Relations at The Alaska Community Foundation, Beth led efforts to raise more than $140 million in four years in current and bequest gifts. This included an endowment campaign that was the most successful of its kind in Alaska, raising more than $110 million in realized and planned gifts. She has also served Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development for the University of Alaska Anchorage Executive Director for Alaska Junior Theater, Communications Director of the Alaska Humanities Forum and Account Manager for Northwest Strategies.Beth has been honored as a YWCA Woman of Achievement, an Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Athena Award and as an Association of Fundraising Professionals Alaska Chapter Fundraising Professional of the Year.
