Project Assistant/ Technician
As an assistant my role included offering both artistic and practical support to the company during the creative process of ‘When We Were Birds’, a performance art piece shown at Cantieri Culturali alla Zissa in Palermo, Sicily. During this time I was responsible for the sourcing of props and costumes in London and the organisation of travel, maintaining a budget and liaising with staff at the venue, dealing with language barriers and challenging communication. Marketing and promotion was a key element requiring competence when using computers and the ability to communicate succinctly with people within and outside of the company. The dual role of assistant and technician required confidence in making aesthetic decisions regarding scenography, composition and performative aspects of the piece as well as technical responsibilities such as film and sound editing; which I handled with understanding and decisiveness whilst maintaining a strong team based work ethic. The show’s success in Sicily consequently led to a larger tour, taking part in Live Art Festivals such as Live Collision in Dublin and GIFT Festival in New Castle.
Project Assistant
During my employment as project assistant at Artillery, I held a number of administrative and social responsibilities during the run-up to a borough wide art festival in Walthamstow (E17 Art Trail). As a project assistant I was responsible for assisting Artillery project managers to deliver a portfolio of projects, liaising with artists, writers, food businesses and schools/community groups, advising on participation in Artillery projects. I helped organise and run networking and project information sharing events as a means of reaching out to local artists and venues and bringing them in to the festival process in addition to office based roles such as compiling and sending out schedules to project partners, financial administration, invoicing, making payments and drafting evaluation reports. This job also required excellent written and communicative skills especially when performing tasks such as drafting letters, emails and newsletters. Aside from official duties such as these, there was great emphasis placed on the importance of being approachable, helpful and having the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people, something which I not only enjoy, but feel very confident in achieving.
Curator Of Visual Arts
My employment as the sole curator of Stratford Circus’ Visual Arts department involved numerous and diverse tasks including general management of the department, sourcing artists and selecting works for exhibitions as well as the organising and hanging of exhibitions. This job enabled me to develop my understanding of composition, design and aesthetics, something I feel could be applied in a variety of sectors ranging from retail, the fashion industry and galleries. Alongside the creative elements of this job I utilised IT/ Communications and web based skills in order to promote and market exhibitions; creating e-flyers and group emails. A key area of this role and one that I found particularly enjoyable was inviting prospective artists to the space and drawing upon my interpersonal skills and pleasant demeanor to encourage artists to display their work at Stratford Circus. My time with Stratford Circus culminated in my first solo exhibition titled FEMME:SKIN for which I sourced all female artists and was responsible for the curation and hanging of their work. Finally, maintaining a professional work ethic both in the office environment and when communicating via email and telephone was vital drawing upon my sophisticated communication skills with both external bodies and other departments within Stratford Circus.
