I currently work online as a private tutor teaching Mathematics, English Language and English Literature up to GCSE level. I have my own private clients and am currently teaching students over Zoom or Microsoft Teams because of the current Covid-19 pandemic. I also work online as a TEFL teacher, helping to prepare students for IELTS exams and delivering informal conversation classes for students to practise speaking English. I currently have a number of students who I teach via Skype, most of whom are currently in China and are preparing for English language examinations or who are pursuing a personal ambition to learn English as a second language. I teach via a number of online tutoring agencies including Palfish (TEFL teaching) and the My Tutor platform. I have been involved in providing lessons as part of the Schools Opportunities Programme, teaching personalised, weekly sessions to pupils who require extra support.I have been teaching as a private tutor since 2012 and have extensive experience teaching students at different levels. Last year, I successfully helped 2 GCSE Foundation Maths students to pass their Mathematics examinations. One student had failed the exam a number of times before seeking my tutoring services and together we raised her grade by over 20 percent.

My role involves assisting and supporting clients to access education, employment, volunteering opportunities and internal and external integration focussed activities. I work individually with clients on a regular basis to support them to engage with integration opportunities and make individual grant applications to assist with education needs. I also work alongside clients to identify their own personal goals and aspirations to help them assimilate and thrive in their local community.

My role involves designing, leading and evaluating information sessions to refugees and asylum seekers on their rights and entitlements. Sessions cover a range of material, including advice and information on the Covid 19 vaccination, the asylum process, the substantive interview and access and entitlement to services. I am also involved in establishing and leading wellbeing activities for our clients, to help tackle social isolation and loneliness. I am currently running an Art group which has a Whatsapp community and meets every month to discuss and share art projects. I work individually with clients to help them set goals, access volunteering opportunities, ESOL classes and learn about local culture and community. I also run awareness raising sessions for local organisations to communicate about the complex needs (especially wellbeing related) of our clients.

My role involves assisting our small team of caseworkers with their immense caseload, attending client and casework meetings and helping with the busy runnings of the office. I am involved in providing vital practical and emotional support to vulnerable migrants, asylum seekers and refugees including domestic violence survivors. I am currently leading a research project funded by the National Institute for Health Research which evaluates the effectiveness of mental health services for refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants in the Colchester area.

I was employed as a Senior Research Officer on a Research Consultancy for UNHCR led by Professor Geoff Gilbert. My role involved research and contribution to an evaluation of UNHCR's rights mapping tool.

During my time at the University of Nottingham I volunteered as an English teacher for STAR. I founded Essex STAR society during my first semester studying at the University of Essex. The society has had a very successful start this year, bringing onboard over 70 members and raising over £600 for STAR National. Essex STAR recently received the Gold Comet Award as a recognition of our achievements this year. Essex STAR has also contributed to the University of Sanctuary working group which has secured the university’s support in applying for University of Sanctuary status and secured two refugee scholarships for the next academic year. This year the society also launched its Conversation and Crafts Club in partnership with Refugee Action Colchester, providing a safe space for women refugees in the community to learn English.

I worked as a TEFL teacher at Moyles Court Summer School for 5 weeks. I taught English to students from China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Georgia, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, South Korea and Kazahsktan. My students ranged from age 9-15 and I taught classes of up to 15 students. The summer school programme was particularly rewarding because of the ability to create my own lesson plans and influence the summer school syllabus and teaching material. The flexibility this granted in the classroom enabled me to work freely and creatively, ensuring each student was given attention and support to achieve their own personal objectives during their time at Moyles Court.
