About Beth Ames Altringer Eagle
I specialize in combining design, engineering, and creative technology to make learning more accessible, visual, interactive, contextual, and delightful. My passion is making the invisible things visible through innovative design, research, and technology. My career began in sustainable design, but my doctoral research at Cambridge on the behavioral science of high-performing innovation teams convinced me to shift the focus of my design firm to data-driven product and UX design, learning design, and creative technology collaboration. My work has been featured in Kinfolk, MIT Museum, Museum of Science, RISD Museum, Thinkers50, Forbes, Boston Magazine, Harvard Business Review, Game Developer Conference, and numerous global outlets and conferences. I’ve brought products, services, and systems to life for Kering, Uber, Piaggio, MIT, Harvard, Brown and RISD, and created design research or programs with the City of Boston, City of Cape Town, Gucci, Puma, FIFA, Swarovski, Microsoft, Disney, Expedia, General Mills, Diageo, Tesco, Stanford, Knight Foundation, and more. I’ve received teaching awards, two technology patents, and made art held by prominent collectors.Since 2021, I run the joint Master of Arts in Design Engineering (MADE) Program at Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design, leveraging over a decade of international experience as a designer and educator. My background includes a Ph.D. from Cambridge, Visiting Scholar at Stanford, postdoc at MIT, and 10 years at Harvard's engineering faculty, where I co-created multidisciplinary design and engineering programs with Harvard's design and business schools.I am currently interested in combining visual and interactive interfaces with data in useful ways that either increase enjoyment or decrease drudgery. An example of increasing enjoyment is inspired by supertaster training, and I've been exploring how technology might help accelerate flavor fluency skill development. An early example is Chef League app, which I launched in 2019, that uses NLP and machine learning to teach novices how to intuitively combine flavors based on professional chef data. This research evolves with new tools. An example of decreasing drudgery is an AI grant-writing assistant that launched in 2022 that I co-designed in support of its mission. If you're passionate about innovative design and technology that enhances learning, motivation, and collaboration, let’s connect!

Co-Founder & Executive Director
CurrentResponsible for the vision, design, research, and management of our joint-MA in Design Engineering degree program between Brown University School of Engineering and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). I work with the leadership of the School of Engineering at Brown, Division of Architecture and Design at RISD, School of Professional Studies, and our wonderful MADE team and students to continuously improve the program. Highlights: I have increased the size and technical level of our application funnel year over year since inception, recruited world class faculty, and am focused on the mission of making this the #1 program for learning to seamlessly collaborate across design and technology. [This is a joint role between Brown and RISD]
Professor | Design Engineering
CurrentIn my role as a full Professor of Practice in Design Engineering, I develop and publish products and launch user experiences, learn from them, and translate what I learn into new courses and projects. Recent projects use data visualization to increase public engagement in complex but important scientific topics of day to day life. A specific example is our recent collaboration with the Museum of Science. Another research area explores how some experts develop flavor fluency and develop deeper understanding of local and sustainable food systems. I’m interested in tools and technologies that accelerate this learning process. I also maintain long-term research projects on multidisciplinary design engineering collaboration and product design desirability.
Faculty | Design Engineering
CurrentThis is a joint faculty associate position. See above.
Faculty Associate
Current• Co-created the Visualizing AI DataTools in Boston’s Urban Spaces project with BKC, exploring data-driven systems for broader human values.• Collaborated with MADE, BKC, and the Edgelands Institute on a research sprint resulting in five interactive exhibits at the Museum of Science.

CurrentDL/Ames Studio is a small full service design studio with services in information design, UI/UX, design research, user-centered design, human-centered design, and taste analysis. Past clients include: Daikin, Uber, Gucci, Puma, IKEA, Disney, Expedia, Microsoft, Bosch, Piaggio, Diageo, SAB Miller, and General Mills. Stern handles all speaking, advising, and consulting requests. The Desirability Lab's 5K+ posts design blog is on pause for now.Since 2017, we have been developing technology tools to help speed up the process of developing flavor fluency, including Chef League and the Flavor Genome Project data engine behind the app. FGP now has millions of data points across multiple large databases that enable us to continue to discover novel ways to communicate and train people to develop their intuition for flavor, despite the sensory and descriptive complexity of food and flavor information. Other internal studio projects include creative coding projects, generative AI projects, and the Desirability Lab blog (on pause). A recent example project (Nov 22 - Jan 24) involved co-developing the grantedai.com.
