Responsible for the vision, design, research, and management of our joint-MA in Design Engineering degree program between Brown University School of Engineering and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). I work with the leadership of the School of Engineering at Brown, Division of Architecture and Design at RISD, School of Professional Studies, and our wonderful MADE team and students to continuously improve the program. Highlights: I have increased the size and technical level of our application funnel year over year since inception, recruited world class faculty, and am focused on the mission of making this the #1 program for learning to seamlessly collaborate across design and technology. In my role as a full Professor of Practice in Design Engineering, I develop and publish products and launch user experiences, learn from them, and translate what I learn into new courses and projects. Recent projects use data visualization to increase public engagement in complex but important scientific topics of day to day life. A specific example is our recent collaboration with the Museum of Science. Another research area explores how some experts develop flavor fluency and develop deeper understanding of local and sustainable food systems. I’m interested in tools and technologies that accelerate this learning process. I also maintain long-term research projects on multidisciplinary design engineering collaboration and product design desirability.

DL/Ames Studio is a small full service design studio with services in information design, UI/UX, design research, user-centered design, human-centered design, and taste analysis. Past clients include: Daikin, Uber, Gucci, Puma, IKEA, Disney, Expedia, Microsoft, Bosch, Piaggio, Diageo, SAB Miller, and General Mills. Stern handles all speaking, advising, and consulting requests. The Desirability Lab's 5K+ posts design blog is on pause for now.Since 2017, we have been developing technology tools to help speed up the process of developing flavor fluency, including Chef League and the Flavor Genome Project data engine behind the app. FGP now has millions of data points across multiple large databases that enable us to continue to discover novel ways to communicate and train people to develop their intuition for flavor, despite the sensory and descriptive complexity of food and flavor information. Other internal studio projects include creative coding projects, generative AI projects, and the Desirability Lab blog (on pause). A recent example project (Nov 22 - Jan 24) involved co-developing the grantedai.com.

Head of Design Research at a Piaggio-funded robotics startup focused on developing innovative solutions to the last mile mobility problem. Ran a team of designers and researchers as the company grew from 4 to over 60 people in two years leading up to the launch of its first human-helper cargo robots, Gita and Kilo. The Gita robot is a smart, nimble, cargo vehicle designed and engineered with the same attention to safety, braking, balancing, vehicle dynamics and performance that you would expect of a motorcycle or car. Gita has been featured in Time, CNN, Wired, Wall Street Journal, Economist, Today Show, and others, and received a number of design awards (Extreme Tech Challenge 2018 Top Ten, MIT-X (Disruptive Genius), Mass TLC Leadership Awards (Innovative Tech of the Year), finalist for the London Design Museum’s Beazley Design of the Year Awards, and more).

Worked with a team of architects on urban slum upgrading projects in the Cape Flats. Focused on building holistic solutions within extremely tight budgets that addressed multiple challenges, including housing, clean water access, dry sanitation, entrepreneurship and community building, education, food security and fire safety. The Tsoga Environmental Centre project was one of 14 recognized internationally by the prestigious Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction.
