Trainer
As a trainer, I was a member of the team responsible for teaching trainees how the service runs and what is required of them and how to use active listening skills.
Listening Volunteer
During my time at Aberystwyth University I volunteered for Aberystwyth Nightline, a confidential and non-judgemental listening service run by students, designed to give students a safe space in which to discuss their problems and feelings surrounding them without feeing judged. As a volunteer, I developed invaluable skills such as active listening, which enables me to hold effective conversations with our callers, encouraging them to discuss personal and occasionally complicated topics such as mental health, university stress, sexual assault, and suicidal thoughts. Using probing and reflective questions also allowed me to help the callers focus in on their feelings about the problems, and often these questions helped callers seeking help with a problem to come to a solution themselves.
Social And Support Officer
Within this role I was required to be a friendly, trustworthy and impartial figure to all volunteers, and it was my duty to be contactable throughout the week. Through being contacted or during organised drop-in sessions, volunteers could seek support and discuss any personal issues, or any issues they encountered within the organisation. Within this role it was also my job to organise fun socials for members, which involved careful deliberation to ensure that themes were enjoyable for all. It was also my job to be an intermediary between volunteers and the executive committee, should they wish to remain anonymous.
Shift Supervisor
As Shift Supervisor, it was my responsibility to then accompany new trainees on their first shift and show them shift procedure.
Nightleader
Within this role it was my job to ensure that shift on my delegated night was filled and able to go ahead, and it was necessary that I be contactable throughout the night to ensure the wellbeing of those on shift and take their place should they be unable to continue. Within this role, I developed my time keeping, perceptiveness, and communication skills. This role also relied upon me being able to evaluate a situation and decide upon the best course of action, such as sending a volunteer home after a difficult call.
Student Ambassador
As a Student Ambassador, I helped on open days at the university. My roles would include giving tours around the campus to prospective students, talking to prospective students about life as a student in Aberystwyth, talking to parents about what living there was like, and giving tours around the department building while explaining what happens in the different labs.
