Check out my portfolio at https://www.bethanylcasarez.com.I am a California-based graphic designer with a passion for food, sustainability, and all things tactile. I especially love brand development and packaging design. My work is bold and minimalistic with a touch of humor. I am a 2022 graduate of Shillington Graphic Design. Prior to Shillington, I was a mechanical engineer focused on human-centered product design, with degrees from MIT and Stanford University. In 2021, I couldn’t resist the creative pull towards graphic design. I began freelancing and enrolled in Shillington. It was the best decision I have made in my career. I love applying creative ideation, user research, and prototyping to the world of brand development, packaging design, and UI/UX.

Mechanical EngineerFathom Oakland|Seattle Nov 2015 - Jun 2016Hartland, Wisconsin, UsDesigned low volume product prototypes for customers on accelerated timelines by leveraging 3D printing (FDM, Polyjet, SLS, and SLA) and FATHOM’s portfolio of advanced manufacturing resources, including injection molding, CNC machining, urethane casting, and laser cutting. Client projects varied greatly, and included enclosures for consumer electronic devices, structural components for electronics test fixtures, ergonomic tools, drone accessories, and biomedical laboratory devices. -
Applications EngineerFathom Oakland|Seattle Nov 2014 - Nov 2015Hartland, Wisconsin, UsProved out 3D printing applications for FATHOM customers in industries ranging from electronics manufacturing, automotive, aerospace to consumer products through consultation, benchmarking, and re-design of parts. For example, re-designed electronics test fixture that justified purchase of $150,000 3D printing machine.Established design/ marketing partnership between FATHOM and e-NABLE, a nonprofit organization providing open source 3D printed upper limb prosthetics to children. Managed FATHOM intern and contributed to original open source 3D printed prosthetic design (‘the Isabella Arm by FATHOM’) incorporating unique functional elements, such as ratcheting tensioner, adaptive grip mechanism, and wrist rotational locking features. Documenting design through Instructable, written content, and video content in collaboration with marketing team.Contributed to design of 3D printed smart leg cast, ‘BOOMcast’ in collaboration with FATHOM design, research, and engineering teams. Designed 3D printed ratcheting straps for cast in 5 days from concept to final product. Authored marketing content on iterative design approach used to accelerate the mechanism development.Taught Stratasys Insight 3D printing software to FATHOM machine customers through 2-day training course. Presented 3D printing applications at company lunch and learns and industry tradeshows. Presented FATHOM’s vision of the Factory of the Future at AmCon Design & Manufacturing Expo 2015. Presented FATHOM contributions to e-NABLE at Autodesk REAL 2015 conference. Attended industry conferences such as AMUG 2015, Rapid 3D 2015, and Solidworks World 2015. -
Mechanical Engineer, New Product DevelopmentFormfactor Inc. Jan 2014 - Aug 2014Livermore, Ca, UsContributed to mechanical design and R&D experiments on cross-disciplinary team of MEMS engineers, PCB designers, electrical & mechanical engineers in development of new probe architecture in testing of silicon wafers. -
Undergraduate ThesisMassachusetts Institute Of Technology (Mit) Feb 2013 - May 2013Cambridge, Ma, UsDesigned small interlocking plastic DNA building blocks for a hands-on life sciences learning kit distributed by the Mind and Hand Alliance of the MIT Edgerton Center; reduced part number and production cost for injection molding manufacturing. First production parts ordered July 2014.Developed 3D CAD models and rapid prototypes of design iterations; used mechanical models to characterize joint mechanisms.Received the MIT Mechanical Engineering Department's Peter Griffith Prize for an Outstanding Experimental Project & Thesis, an award given to one senior each year. -
Summer Undergraduate Research FellowUniversity Of Michigan Jun 2012 - Aug 2012Ann Arbor, Michigan, UsPerformed numeric simulations to study the effect of networked vehicle control strategies on traffic dynamics.Formulated a condition for linear stability of vehicle networks using a simple control strategy.Presented a research poster to faculty and students at the SROP Symposium. -
Summer Undergraduate Research FellowStanford University Jun 2011 - Aug 2011Stanford, Ca, UsDesigned and fabricated an MR-compatible device to measure knee rotational stiffness that is currently used in the lab for a clinical study of biomechanical changes following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgical reconstruction.Acquired, processed, and analyzed gait data and MR images from ACL-reconstructed subjects, which contributed to a long-term clinical study of changes to knee biomechanics following surgery. -
Summer Undergraduate Research FellowNational Institute Of Standards And Technology Jun 2010 - Aug 2010Gaithersburg, Md, UsConducted experiments to study mechanical properties of photoactive layers in organic solar cells, which led to co-authorship of a journal article published in Advanced Energy Materials.
