Represent all five WSU campuses and our global campus in providing strategic analysis and policy expertise on a variety of issues, including research and faculty and student success, to advance WSU’s institutional advocacy, funding, and policy goals, providing a fixed presence with members of Congress and the Executive Branch including federal agencies, and national-level organizations.

Enhance the role of Astronomy within the public sector and be the voice of Astronomy to political leaders, working to promote the field overall.

Direct the research policy program to strengthen and advance the work of 245 public university institutions across all 50 states, DC, four U.S. territories, Canada, and Mexico. Design and execute federal strategy on research policy issues, including the importance and impact of university research; ensuring research security; decrease burden of regulatory compliance; and preparing and sustaining an expert and diverse scientific and technical workforce. Sought out as an expert from media outlets, government agencies, and research organizations. Direct the Council on Research (COR), an APLU constituency group of senior research officers. Direct multiple large projects and functions, such as organizing conferences and workshops and research policy white papers.

Advocate for a broad range of fields in the physical sciences and collectively represents more than 120,000 scientists, engineers, educators and students in the global physical sciences community in Washington, DC. Manage the government relations advocacy services for member societies and affiliated clients. Lead the Physical Science Education Policy Coalition, which focuses on improving physical science education and STEM Education policy. Develop and implement tailored, nuanced strategies to educate, inform and constructively influence policy and policy-makers.

Federal advocate for over 18,000 scientists in academia, industry, and government,12,500 Certified Crop Advisers (CCA), and 781 Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS). Monitor and analyze federal legislative authorizations and appropriations. Interact with executive branch, federal agencies, Congress and other advocacy groups to explore and identify new funding to advance priorities. Manage the Congressional Soils Caucus, with over 40 members of Congress, by creating collaborative educational events and advancing issue-oriented policy. Prepare position statements, correspondence, testimony, draft legislation, and Dear Colleague letters to promote key issues and strategic priorities.

Federal registered lobbyist directing government relations for major organization of professional astronomers in North America with over 7000 members. Advised leadership on policy strategies, statements, and reports. Developed successful advocacy and communication strategies on mission priorities, created and managed grassroots advocacy and forming coalitions. Built relationships with Congress, Executive branch, federal agencies, and industry. Analyzed, monitored, and drafted authorization and appropriations legislation.

Director of graduate student professional development grant and mentoring services. Managed large team of over 12 employees and volunteers. Increased grant applications by over 300% and conducted fundraising that increased budget by over 20 times.
