About Bethany Schaarschmidt
After spending over 20 years in higher education, I am ready to rediscover myself. While I have been involved in online education from all different perspectives - student, faculty, course designer, program director, academic advisor, success coordinator, and administrator - I was uniquely qualified and very successful in to recognizing and addressing the unique barriers to online program success, and lead my institution during the pivot to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. As higher education is finding its new feet, I am ready to dive into some self-reflection and decide where I want to land. I am looking for a job that enriches me as much as I contribute to it, and I find myself back on a journey towards ocean advocacy.On the side, I am an avid wellness practitioner in my personal and professional life, supporting, promoting, addressing the harmful impact of weight bias in our society. I have been a Health at Every Size practitioner for nearly 20 years, and am an active member of the Association for Size, Diversity, and Health - a professional community that researches, socializes, and addresses the negative effects of weigh bias. Even with overwhelming evidence to show that fatness is not a disease, body size discrimination continues to be unrecognized by legislature and underrepresented in policy, hindering efforts for equity and inclusion. My doctoral dissertation is analyzing the views of executive leadership in the field of higher education on implementing policy that protects people from being discriminated based on body size.Love the person, not the package.
