About Bethany Moslen, M. Ed.

As a teacher I believe in creating a safe, welcoming space, where students see themselves in what we are learning, with no judgement. I feel it is important to meet students where they are in life and to help them find their passions, may that be in music, leadership, art, theatre, communication, or even helping others. My experience the past few years has taken me from University level all the way to Secondary 7-12, currently working with 7th and 8th graders. As someone who had the opportunity to start my teaching career at a University I have a different perspective on students as they grow. Being at the University level helped me realize what was missing from many different students music and general education, a lot of it is surrounded by the idea that students need to be seen and have positive relationship in the class to find value in learning the subject. Every student is important, and though a lot of what I learned in music school was Eurocentric white based history, I strive to learn beyond what I paid for to make sure every person in the classroom is seeing themselves in some way. Supporting Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, LGTBQ+, neuroivergent, and students with disabilities is imperative, and as an educator I strongly believe in making sure marginalized voices always have space to be seen and heard in the classroom. As educators I hope we can all see the value in growing our own knowledge in our fields of practice, as things are always changing in education and the world, even after graduating with our degrees, we are still students. It’s important to remind ourselves that even though our own teachers taught something one way it doesn’t mean we need to teach the same way. We can still be great teachers even if we try to do things in different ways, after all isn’t that what we encourage our students to do as well?
