Fish Biologist
Current1. Assists the Groundfish Assessment Program (GAP) Project Manager and Survey Leader with the annual planning of the Alaska Biennial Bottom Trawl Survey.- As Field Party Chief, Deck Boss, or biologist, plans for daily and cruise operations.- Works effectively with all staff to plan and prepare for the bottom trawl survey.- Plans for supplies and equipment needed for the Alaska Biennial Bottom Trawl Survey as needed.- Plans for staffing, training, charting, data support, reporting, or other tasks assigned for the Alaska Biennial Bottom Trawl Survey.2. Plans for participation in studies, projects, and tasks for Groundfish Research and and other studies when appropriate:- Assists in developing studies to conduct survey and groundfish research.- Assists in developing equipment and field mobilization plans to support seasonal studies.- Develop plans, with co-workers, to collect, record, and process samples and analyze data such as video images, stomach samples, tagging data, age, growth, and maturity.3. Conducts resource survey operations on the Alaska Biennial Bottom Trawl Survey.- Spends up to 60 days at sea per year including participating in the Alaska Biennial Bottom Trawl Surveys as a biologist, Deck Boss and/or Field Party Chief.- Sea duties include identifying and sorting marine fishes and invertebrates, processing catches, collecting biological data and samples.- Conducts staffing, training, charting, data support, reporting, or other tasks assigned for the Alaska Biennial Bottom Trawl Survey.4. Assists and conducts field and laboratory work on survey research, habitat requirements, feeding, movement, age, growth, reproduction, or ecological relationships of groundfishes in Alaskan waters.- Mobilizes and operates research equipment and collects data for surveys and studies, as needed.- Conducts routine analyses of video images, stomach samples, tagging data, age, growth, maturity, and other pertinent samples and data, as needed.
