I have a passion for helping people become better communicators, and especially for helping women succeed in a “man’s world”, a passion born of my unique life experiences:• I’m an engineer, which may be genetic, as my father and brother are both electrical engineers;• I’ve been speaking in public since third grade, when I narrated the all-school Christmas pageant.After college, I jumped into the “man’s world” of engineering by hiring on with the US Bureau of Reclamation as a civil engineer. I also continued developing communication skills by joining Toastmasters International.In Toastmasters, I learned that communication is much more than giving presentations:• I discovered the satisfaction of providing feedback to help speakers improve;• While serving on the Toastmaster International Board of Directors I enjoyed training members and officers and serving as a spokesperson to the media and to corporate management.I didn’t realize how those communication skills would shape my professional career, propelling me from cubicle-bound engineer to project manager for projects including:• Modifications at 2 dams, facilitating contentious public meetings and appearing on TV to explain the need for and progress on the projects;• A Department of the Interior wide effort to reduce the risks posed by dams.My experiences as a female engineer and a Toastmaster have led to several activities to help people improve their communication skills:• Leading a Toastmasters program for offenders at a Colorado women’s prison;• Developing and presenting training for groups like the Society of Women Engineers and the Federally-Employed Women who are interested in projecting a more powerful impressionI’m eager to share what I’ve learned as a women in a “man’s world” with other individuals and groups who’d like to become more effective communicators.
