I am a Lecturer in Film at the University of Southampton.I studied for both my undergraduate and masters degrees at the University of Southampton where I have developed a focus in theory, the musical, sound, agency and video games.In 2015 I finished my PhD thesis at the University of Southampton titled 'The Representation of Space in Musical Numbers', in which I argue for a new spatial methodological approach to the analysis of films using the musical as a case study. It is a methodological approached based upon an exploration into abstract audio-visual aesthetics which pays particular attention to the interactions between sound and image. My thesis challenges the dominance of cognitive theory by providing an approach based upon gestalt theory, making use of ‘forensic’ analysis to remove aesthetics from their narrative context. Running parallel to my PhD I have edited a number of journals and organised conferences (obtaining funding from both internal and external sources). I have taught extensively at both UG and MA level and have gained experience at teaching a range of students from different backgrounds.I have attended and delivered papers at major international conferences including Screen, BAFTSS and Music and the Moving Image (MAMI, NY). My monograph titled Feeling Film: A Spatial Approach was released by Palgrave at the end of November 2016.My current research sees me exploring disgust in video games.Specialities: Theory (classical and post-classical), genre, stardom, haptics, space, Hollywood cinema, musicals, European cinema, film music and sound, gestalt theory, embodiment, video games, phenomenology, media specificity, and agency.
