From 2009-2023, the Advance Family Planning (AFP) advocacy initiative comprised 20 partner organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and globally. Coalitions used the evidence-based SMART Advocacy approach developed and refined by AFP, to increase the financial investment and political commitment needed to ensure access to quality, voluntary contraceptive information, services, and supplies. AFP partners and coalitions achieved 3,454 advocacy wins and mobilized $185.7 million in funding for family planning from 2012-2022. AFP also seeded a community of practice. Advocates across all levels: global, regional, national, and local levels have sustained advocacy and accountability for family planning, and adapted the approach to advance gender equality and a range of health and development issues.AFP focused ongoing efforts in nine countries: Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda. Funding and technical support were also provided to nongovernmental organizations in seven other countries through the Opportunity Fund: Benin, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Zambia.AFP was established within the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with the leadership and support of the Bill & Melinda Gates, David & Lucile Packard, and William and Flora Hewlett Foundations and two anonymous donors. In a complementary effort, AFP collaborated with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, Western Hemisphere Region (now Fos Feminista) to replicate its approach in three countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The one-year advocacy effort led to improved access to contraceptive information, services, and supplies for adolescents in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.A new African-led initiative, the SASA Alliance, aspires to continue and evolve application of SMART Advocacy.
