Beth L. Gainer Email and Phone Number
I teach a variety of English courses, which include business- and technical-writing, the required composition course sequence, and literature such as poetry, drama, and fiction. I developed a business-writing service learning course, where students wrote a variety of material on behalf of community organizations. and helped learning community delivery model. I work with integrating learning communities into courses, where students participate in fund-raising and grant-writing campaigns for various nonprofit organizations.Because I am a practitioner faculty -- a quality my college values -- my teaching is complemented by my real-world editing and writing experience. My students have repeatedly told me that they can see the difference in the quality of teaching between me and English faculty who are not practitioners in their field of expertise. According to one student, the best thing about his class with me was "The privilege to learn from someone who is actually a professional writer." In addition, my students see that every day I practice what I teach. I tell them when I am struggliing with the writing process, so they see that real writers struggle just as they do. It is one more way my students feel a connection to me and see that I set an example for them.Specialties: Service learning and learning communities; writing, revision, editing; all literary genres.
