I spent 9 weeks growing in my understanding of the challenges facing the Structures industry, the day to day tasks of a structural engineer, and the evolving sustainability regulations regarding buildings. My main role involved calculating the embodied carbon of building designs so that Ramboll could better evaluate their own sustainability and adhere to the Institute of Structural Engineers' benchmarks. In my final week, I had the opportunity to use these skills in surveying Ashton Gate Football stadium and writing up the annual report.

I spent five weeks in the Air Traffic and Acoustics department at DLR on a project concerning the localisation of infrasound signals. DLR had been commissioned by the German government to investigate the controversies surrounding infrasound, which led to restrictive legislation concerning onshore wind turbines. I used Acoular (a software package built in Python by Technical University of Berlin researchers) to simulate sound sources and microphone arrays. From these I produced various graphs and heatmaps modelling sound wave distribution and intensity to determine the nature and location of infrasound produced by wind turbines. I researched and developed methods and programmed a script which, given an infrasound source and an array of 3 microphones forming an equilateral triangle, determined the direction of arrival angle of the infrasound signal.

I wrote product and brand sustainability reviews, contributed to and reviewed others' work. I critically investigated and analysed raw materials, processes, workers' conditions and product life-cycles.

I was part of the trial Click & Collect team which meant we were required to meet quantitative goals (such as pick & pack time, customer wait time) as a team for Click & Collect to become a permanent operation at the Seaford store. We were successful in this and I developed skills in remaining clear-headed whilst personally delivering up to 20 orders per hour and managing dissatisfied customers.
