Polymer Support - R&D Liason Team
This role was offered to me as an extension of my 12 month student work placement role. I assisted with various aspects of an extremely high priority project involving an improved ink coating on polymer substrate for banknotes. My time was spent divided between attending gravure printing trials at De La Rue's coating factory, and testing samples for durability in the R&D labs. During production trials I was responsible for general overseeing of the printing and quick quality control checks to ensure the ink systems were performing successfully.During R&D testing, I was responsible for subjecting the printed samples to various chemical and physical durability tests, and report back findings to the project team. These results helped steer the team towards finding an ink system which we could reliably trust to put forward as a new product.
Research Student - Research Team
"De La Rue is the world’s largest commercial banknote printer and passport manufacturer and is a trusted partner of governments, central banks and commercial organisations around the world."As a member of the Research Team I was involved in a project to optimise a novel method of printing multi-coloured fine lines in order to create a secure lenticular flip feature. During this project I gained knowledge and skills in water soluble polymers for printing and properties of conventional printing inks. I also became familiar with basic micro-optic concepts. This research was all compiled into a thesis which contributed to my final degree mark.During this work placement I realised my desire to work in the materials field of science, helping to create products with direct and realisable practical applications.
