When I was a senior in high school I decided journalism would be my path in college. I took a radio and TV production course and fell in love with the “glitz and the glamour.” After doing a little more research, I landed on public relations. It seemed to be somewhere in-between.Since school, I’ve had the pleasure of interning or working in all three communications arenas – corporate, non-profit and agency. Through career experience I’ve learned more skills than college could have ever prepared me for. Back in 2008, they didn’t have a social media class. I bet they do now.Although I enjoy most facets of the field, it would be dishonest to say I didn’t have some favorites. Within the last few years I’ve become fascinated with crisis communications. It’s a critical, yet in my mind, underused area. This is probably because, for the most part, crises are few and far between. Thank goodness. Social media has constantly kept me on my toes. Just when I think I know everything, I quickly find out I don’t. The world is changing at a rapid pace. I try to stay somewhere in between the “go” and the “stop.” In a corporate setting, communicating to external and internal audiences is always fascinating. I find it especially significant when you're passionate about your company’s mission. People are always your most vital asset. If you aren’t communicating with them, you will not thrive.
