Betsy Karmin, a Partner in Morris Manning's Washington, DC office, concentrates her practice on commercial real estate transactions, including leasing, financing, acquisitions and sales. Ms. Karmin represents landlords and tenants in office and retail leasing, including ground leases, as well as lenders and borrowers for construction and permanent financing. She represents a national franchiser in structuring complex air rights and redevelopment projects and has extensive experience in equity investing for institutional investors. Ms. Karmin recently represented (while at another Firm): (a) a building owner for a 200,000 square foot lease to Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, which received the 2011Washington Business Journal Best Real Estate Deal Award for Lease Renewal, (b) a building owner for a 173,000 square foot lease to The CNA Corporation, which received the 2012 Commercial Real Estate Women Dealmaking Award, (c) an international bank to restructure two multifamily projects and an office building, (d) a national equity investor for a joint venture acquisition of a 128,000 square foot office building, (e) a national developer for a $175,000,000 loan from a life insurance company secured by a 589,000 office building, (f) a national developer to negotiate a restatement of a complex ground lease for a 155,000 square foot office building.In December, 2011, Ms. Karmin was selected as one of Washington, DC's "Legal Elite" by SmartCEO magazine. She served as President of the Washington, DC Chapter of Commercial Real Estate Women in 2013. Ms. Karmin serves on the Board of Directors of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and on the Board of Directors of Goodwill of Greater Washington. In addition to private practice, Ms. Karmin served as General Counsel for a company developing centers to provide the laser vision correction procedure throughout the US and Canada.
