Director, Creative ServicesThe Scientist Apr 2017 - May 2019Midland, On, CaThe concept of a "Creative Services" team within a scientific publishing house was untested when The Scientist (part of LabX Media Group) first debuted it, but the reception was resoundingly positive. Life science companies (e.g., instrument manufacturers, reagent manufacturers, etc.) without the in-house expertise to develop scientific marketing content could rely on a team of scientific creatives to ideate, draft, develop, and produce a full suite of print, video, and digital content to promote, persuade, and educate the scientific public. As Director, I set the strategy and standards for a team of PhD-level Scientific Technical Editors and Video Production Experts who developed custom content for life-sciences companies to educate and entertain their customers. Working in a consultative manner to develop unique programs to exceed customer project specs, I endeavored to generate inspiring, exciting content marketing projects, with a focus on technical excellence. Benefitting from The Scientist Magazine's highly engaged followers, I used our high-quality, scientifically sound, and educational articles, infographics, videos, and a whole host of bespoke products, to prospect and nurture leads for our brand partners. Beyond the scientific team, a vibrant Social Media team curated a mix of social content from scientific news and sponsored posts to drive views and site visits. In concert with Sales and Editorial, we developed strategies to drive brand growth and YOY sales revenue. -
Scientific Technical Editor, Creative ServicesThe Scientist Mar 2016 - Apr 2017Midland, On, CaAs a Scientific Technical Editor for the nascent Creative Services team at The Scientist Magazine, I worked in concert with life science companies to consultatively develop both inbound and outbound marketing content for their brands. By targeting and engaging custom content for life-science companies, I used articles, webinars, quizzes, videos, and infographics to prospect and develop leads. Placing top value on the scientific rigor and compelling nature of the content, including white papers, application notes, and nurture streams, I was able to build our customer's visibility on the web sites, in print, in paid/3rd party media, and earned social media. -
Social Media ConsultantNew England Biolabs Nov 2015 - Mar 2016Ipswich, Ma, UsIn an interim capacity, I managed the company's social media accounts across several platforms, creating and deploying scientifically sound & topically engaging social media content to support product launches, on-going awareness campaigns, and brand identity. This included interacteg with customers via social messaging to answer questions, guide product decisions, and promote NEB's unique culture. I also researched and wrote feature articles for NEB Expressions, a quarterly newsletter. -
Technical Writer (Scientific)New England Biolabs Nov 2011 - Nov 2015Ipswich, Ma, UsCustomer-facing scientific content for print & web collateral needs to be clear, concise, and scientifically accurate. With this metric as the guide, I wrote, edited, & proofed feature articles and scientific copy, developed in consultation with NEB's scientists, all within NEB's brand guidelines. This grew to include developing scripts, ad copy, and newsletter content, from concept generation and storyboarding to voice over for rich media/animations. Being a global organization, content requests had varied timelines and requirements; I grew to be responsible for project management of both internally and externally sourced collateral. Along with other marketing collateral, I created social media content, and developed the best deployment strategy. Finally, towards the end of my tenure, I unlocked "Certified Molecular Biologist" achievement following a 2-week intensive molecular biology course at Smith College. -
Scientific Consultant/Research ScientistSharp Edge Labs Oct 2011 - Nov 2012Pittsburgh, Pa, UsThe brainchild of two heavy hitters in the fluorescent biosensors space, Sharp Edge Labs had big plans for its dark dyes. As a startup in the Cummings Center in Beverly, MA, the company was focused on generating proof-of-principle data. My role was to establish yeast bioreactor cultures and evaluate the successful expression of the expected proteins. The company moved to Pittsburgh. -
Biology TeacherPingree School Sep 2010 - Jan 2011South Hamilton, Ma, UsAs a 6-month maternity leave substitute teacher, I had the unique pleasure of teaching four sections of high school biology (1 AP, 3 Sophomore sections) at The Pingree School. There, I also raised three anoles from small, brownish lizardlings into slightly larger, brownish lizards with a healthy appetite for crickets and biology-classroom conversation (sub-specialization in cricket husbandry). -
Ph.D. In NeurosciencesCwru/Cleveland Clinic Oct 2005 - May 2010Cleveland, Ohio, UsChronically demyelinated axons exhibit ultrastructural and molecular derangements. In patients with multiple sclerosis, prospective MRI/pathology correlation of how chronic demyelination impacts axonal caliber and conduction point to the source of the short- and long-term disability. Working with human CNS tissue, procured and processed with the Cleveland Clinic rapid autopsy response team, uncovered molecular changes (i.e., internodal Na/K ATPase) that explain the massive functional deficits. Further, developed an ex vivo assay to recapitulate myelination and demyelination in spinal explants. As the Neuroscience Department's microscopy liaison, I maintained and trained labmates on optimal use of the group's confocal fluorescence microscopes. -
Associate Scientist IiAmgen Apr 2004 - Jun 2005Thousand Oaks, Ca, UsPre-clinical validation of a novel anti-amyloid therapy for Alzheimer's Disease via the in vitro phagocytosis assay, tissue harvest/processing/histology/analysis, confocal microscopy, maintenance of the pre-clinical tissue bank.
