Utica was the turning point for me where all that I had worked for in individual giving was at first shattered by the reality of how poverty burdens the child's ability to learn, flourish and hopefully pursue a college education.With the benefit of the leadership of Superintendent Daniel Lowengard, we were able to create and implement a funding program for the District that established long standing programs and benefits--some of which continue to this day.Program Developer and Grant Writer for Utica City School District, Utica, NY. Acquired more than $18m in public and private competitive grants for the District including the $6.2m US Departments of Education, Health and Human Services and Justice: Safe School/Healthy Students Grant; NYS Model program and grant for Teachers of Tomorrow and private funding for the District's efforts in urban excellence in education which was lauded by the NYS Deputy Commissioner for Education. We also had the pleasure of establishing the Excellence in Urban Education program with Dan Lowengard, Bill Scott and others from SUNY New Paltz and Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Syracuse University for me was not only an outstanding professional opportunity but an extension of the legacy of my father Frank P. Mammone whose affiliation with Utica College of Syracuse University spanned more than 62 years. At Syracuse I was given the opportunity to revive the Central New York giving base and that is exactly what occurred. This was the first time that I truly came to understand how to maximize the passion friends and alumni have for athletics into support for the academic and program areas of the University. While athletics might have opened the door to becoming closer to the University, once inside the ability to interest givers into the bigger picture of what the University was accomplishing and needed support for was a wonderful progression.Leaders like Dr. Lansing Baker, Dr. Sid Micek and colleagues in the field helped create a dynamic atmosphere in which to work, help generate substantial resources and significantly continue my learning progression in the advancement realm.

Here I had the opportunity to flourish and learn with the nation's premier planned giving experts. Whether speaking at Madison Square Garden about the benefits of planned giving in a comprehensive campaign or having a one-on-one dialogue with a family about gifting a summer island that had been in one family for generations, this work was lessons in action about the true meaning behind giving. I have taken this experience with me throughout the years and relationships established in the early 1990s remain a constant in my life today.
