Peer Volunteer Co-Ordinator
Volunteer Co-Ordinator
When I started this role in 2010, there were volunteers in the Trafford borough only. My challenge was to recruit and retain volunteers in the Wigan and Bolton areas. As it was a new concept, my first task was to visit every fire station in Wigan and Bolton. I diarised presentations to every watch. 8 station each with 5 watches at the time. Some of the presentations were challenging as there were mixed reactions to the concept of volunteers, so my confidence enabled me to deal with this effectively. At its peak, I managed 80 volunteers and co-ordinated activities for them. I provide mentoring and support wherever necessary, and have played a mentoring role to new members of staff. I also provide training and advice on our Dutysheet volunteer database and created a user manual. I regularly liaise with other agencies such as local councils, other voluntary organisations and local partnerships. I have the ability to support any individual according to their needs and always seek feedback from the volunteers I supervise. I have a good understanding of Health and Safety and equality and diversity legislation which are required in my current role. Any activity that volunteers carry out have to be risk assessed and the correct protective clothing supplied. I get involved in the recruitment of volunteers from shortlisting to interview, and then on to support them should they be located in one of my boroughs.Twice a year the volunteers have a 1-2-1 meeting with myself to see if we are meeting their expectations and also if they require any training relevant to their volunteering role.I am able to work independently and prioritise my workloads. I work well as part of a team and can lead when required.
Deputy Application Manager
My role of Deputy Application Manager for Agresso was a System administration role. Duties of this job was to look after the day to day running of the Agresso system and answer any queries to end users. I was in regular contact with the developers and attended many training courses and updates. With the Application manager, we regularly tested new versions before rolling out to end users. Again, I was responsible for training end users either by going out to them individually or running a course in a training environment.Cheshire Fire Service were also going through the same process of building their Agresso system, so I regularly went to Cheshire to share my experience and train their project team.
Agresso Project Team
GMFRS was to purchase a new financial system Agresso to go 'Live' later in the year of 2003. Being a 'guru' in Logistics and Purchasing, I joined a Project team to 'build' the system that would meet the financial requirements. The system incorporated Finance and accounting, purchasing, logistics, accounts payable, accounts received, uniform records, requisitioning, fleet management, buildings management and hydrant management. Being the purchasing and logistics expert, I introduced web requisitioning which was a totally new concept. In preparation for its introduction, I delivered a number of Roadshows across the service with an overview of the changes that would be implemented once the new system went ‘live’. I have trained key departments on how to process information in the system and created user manuals to help users gain confidence in using the system. I also trained all GMFRS staff and uniformed officers. In addition to this I created training course documents: aims and objectives of the course and a teaching script for each course ensuring all objectives had been covered. I also programmed and delivered refresher courses and advised and trained people over the telephone using remote access. Cheshire Fire Service were also going through the same process of building their Agresso system, so I regularly went to Cheshire to share my experience and train their project team.
