I have enjoyed working with people with intellectual disabilities in New Zealand and the UK for more than 40 years in a range of different roles. I joined United Response in 1991, and since then my research and practice has particularly focused on person-centred approaches, active support, practice leadership and positive behaviour support. I worked extensively with the late Professor Jim Mansell and Dr Julie Beadle-Brown on the implementation and evaluation of Person Centred Active Support over the last 20 years and am co-author of the Person-centred Active Support Training Pack (2nd Edition) and the Person-centred Active Support Handbook. I have also contributed to the development of a variety of training resources such as the Promoting Person Centred Support and Positive Outcomes DVD and Open Futures Active Support On-line Training. I have led on the implementation and evaluation of person-centred active support nationally in United Response since 1998 and have provided consultation services to a number of organisations in the UK, including Dimensions and the National Autistic Society and have facilitated a variety of person-centred active support and practice leadership masterclasses and workshops in Australia and Finland. I became chair of the UK Positive Behaviour Support Alliance, a partnership of organisations and communities of practice focused on improving the quality of life of people whose behaviour may challenge services and those providing support, in 2023.
