Professor O’Connell is a Professor at Edith Cowan University. She is a renowned expert with more than 30 years’ experience teaching and researching in nursing and aged care. Her track record includes successfully completing several large-scale research projects for the Australian and Victorian Governments in the areas of aged care, falls prevention, continence management, and carer needs. Professor O’Connell has held several senior academic roles nationally and internationally including Professor and Dean Faculty of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, Canada (2012 – 2017) and Associate Dean (Research) at the Faculty of Health, Deakin University (2009 – 2012), Inaugural Chair in Nursing a joint appointment across Deakin University and Southern Health in Melbourne (2006 -2012). She currently holds the positions of Honorary Professor, Deakin University, Melbourne. Bev has led large teams of researchers using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Her most substantial research work was the development and implementation of the Tri-focal model of care which included the research and development of evidence based educational materials for students and aged care staff. This innovative model of partnership centred aged care incorporates the teaching nursing home concept. Bev has supervised numerous honours, masters and PhD students to completion including a doctoral student who was awarded the Alfred Deakin Medal for the best doctoral thesis at Deakin University in 2011. Bev’s track record to date includes: In excess of 65 successful grant applications attracting more than 4.8 million dollars; More than 100 published articles in peer reviewed journals; More than 50 publications in books, book chapters, and reports;• More than 100 presentations at international, national, and local conferences. She is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal Contemporary Nurse.
