I'm an indie author, writing dark fantasy/horror/modern gothic. Currently working on book three of my reader acclaimed trilogy, The Gabriel Davenport Series.-The Making of Gabriel Davenport, is not the kind of book you dive into and stay up all night until you've finished. It's entirely too big and definitely too good a read to devour all at once. Lee's evil entity is one of the scariest literary monsters out there, and Clove, her dark angel/knight in shining armor, is unforgettable and larger than life. The author peoples Gabriel's world with fascinating characters who are heroic at times in their struggle to protect Gabriel and survive the siege of an ancient and evil demon. This is a finely plotted and beautifully written literary fiction masterpiece, and I'm thrilled that there's a sequel in the works. Or maybe I should say this is that world she pulls you into. There are no maybes. Beverley Lee crafts this novel as she did the first in the series, but with ever evolving skill. It doesn't just come alive, but engulfs the reader. This is a three-dimensional reading experience with three-dimensional atmosphere. The chills are just the beginning.There's no stagnation in this novel. It moves on with the logic you didn't see coming. It evolves characters already alive (or sometimes undead). It tosses surprises and settles a disquieting veil over readers wondering if maybe, just maybe, they should sleep with the light on. Yet, it's equally moving, reminding us what it is to be alive, to love, to cherish others. And always there's the urgency that's the hallmark of a great novel.I had equal admiration for the first book in the series, but this novel is also a stand-alone, and it stands alone as a gripping read that I can't recommend enough.C.
