Dr. Beverly Thompson is a Senior Scientist in the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Accelerator, where she develops AI/ML solutions in computer vision, geospatial and multimedia exploitation applications. For over 23 years she has conducted image/signal exploitation and rapid prototype development in multiple areas to include atmospheric and terrestrial remote sensing, global monitoring and instability forecasting, and biomedical imaging and cancer detection. Dr. Thompson joined Leidos (then SAIC) in 2001 from Sandia National Laboratory. She has made significant contributions to several national defense projects and led successful transition of many research and prototype technologies into operational programs within the DoD and Intelligence Community.Dr. Thompson is a Leidos Technical Fellow. Her current research is focused on methods to improve resilience, security, assurance, and user trust in AI and ML. She leads the development/integration of Ethical frameworks to support Trusted AI platforms and technical lead on integration of Fairness metrics, Explainability and Bias mitigation solutions to improve AI/ML model performance and understand end-user impact, as a key component of the Accelerator’s Framework for AI Resilience (FAIRS) Trusted AI and Ethics platform. She is a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s Women4EthicalAI Platform focused on advancement of their Global Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.Dr. Thompson is a tireless champion of STEM efforts both in U.S. and abroad. As a role model, board member, and Africa Lead for Career Girls (careergirls.org), the largest online video platform to scale and amplify the voices of diverse/successful role models, she supports projects for women and girls in several African countries. Global women and youth empowerment projects include Harare/Kufunda Learning Village in Zimbabwe, Starlight Africa and Women For Women International in Rwanda. She brings technical expertise to her humanitarian work and is interested in the use of geospatial technology for human rights documentation and conflict early-warning prediction and prevention.
