People Development Manager
As the People Development Manager, along with my team our task was to provide specific and targeted training in World Class Mail (Manufacturing) tools & techniques at Swindon Mail Centre. With over 700 staff in the unit, development was required for all - from the Mail Centre Manager through to the operators on the 'sorting floor'. Working closely with my World Class Mail colleagues, we identified training needs in order to ensure the cycle of continous improvement could continue to progress by engaging our people and giving the benefit of a cleaner, more efficient workplace. In addition to the training needs, I also provided the HR interface for the unit, between the managers on site and the HR specialist team. This involved supporting and guiding floor managers through the conduct and absence management processes as well as recruitment interviews for managers, deputy managers and work place coaching teams.Significant progress was made in reducing the level of absence within the unit by carrying out extensive analysis, identifying problem areas and peak times and putting measures and support practices in place to improve attendance rates.
Continuous Improvement Technical Standards And Documentation Manager
The Royal Mail continuous improvement programme, World Class Mail (WCM), was implemented in August 2008, in conjunction with the World Class Manufacturing Association. Initially my involvement at the start of the programme was merged with my role in communications. I moved full time to WCM in April 2009 as the Technical Standards and Documentation Manager and the role involved producing a standardised set of documentation for use by WCM teams nationwide. The production and delivery of training material was also part of my role, including creating material that could be easily understood and delivered by others. During my time in this role I also developed and managed the first WCM sharepoint (portal) site to enable colleagues from around the UK to access the most up to date material and programme support information for World Class Mail techniques.
Technical Communication Manager
The Technical Communication Manager role was a new opportunity to bring communications specifically to the UK engineering community within Royal Mail. My responsibility was to develop the role by creating standards for Technical communications to the Royal Mail Engineering Maintenance team across the UK. This involved writing briefs that were relevant and timely, working independently to write briefs or with senior engineers to develop and circulate their material. Another exciting element of this role was the organisation of events, whether formal conferences for the Engineering management team or training events for engineers and apprentices. My responsibility was to pull together the entire event including accommodation, catering, conference/training/presentation material, seating arrangements, travel arrangements, equipment and organising entertainment where required.
Postal Electronic Test & Repair Dept., (Petra) Manager
Leading a team of specialist technicians to provide a high quality repair service was my main undertaking as the Manager of Royal Mail's electronic test and repair centre. The role was evolved to include the mechanical engineering workshop and to assimilate new repair facilities for additional mailsort equipment. The job required a good knowledge of spares management and in-house repair abilities/techniques to enable the ideal turnaround time of high-frequency repairable items used in mailsort technology throughout the UK.
