Created a start-up embedded within Walmart.com and introduced modern development practices; opened Portland office and pioneered distributed team culture. Key part of team that introduced industry-leading mobile applications for Walmart, achieving triple-digit revenue and team productivity growth.

Together with long-time collaborator Dion Almaer, focused on creating technology to enable a new class of high-performance, highly dynamic web application, which we called “conditional tier rendering”. Succeeded in achieving positive press coverage and hosting dozens of world-wide developer events for Palm and helping to enlist A-list brands like EA, Glu, and Gameloft on webOS as well as a solid cohort of indie developers. Hands-on led small skunkworks effort that created what Joshua Topolsky called “the best mobile implementation of Facebook we've seen".

Created a pioneering web-based code editor, Bespin (later renamed Skywriter), that became the foundation and/or inspiration for the emerging category of web-based developer environments such as ACE and Cloud9; also notably Palm's pioneering web-based app development studio called Ares.

After helping to develop core technology acquired by MediaBank as a consultant (see below), I joined the management team full-time to assist in their integration the technology.

Provided web, Java, and XML-related consulting for various clients. Primary client was a New Jersey-based ad tech firm who I materially assisted in their efforts to port a COBOL-based system to Java; I provided technical leadership for the Java Swing front-end efforts, creating a framework, performed some of the porting, and trained and supported other.

Concurrent with other professional activities and in partnership with Dion Almaer, created the leading website tracking the emerging “Ajax” movement: Ajaxian.com. Built Ajaxian.com into a profitable business through ad sales and by launching a sponsor-supported professional conference series. Sold to TechTarget in 2007; continued advising TechTarget for.

On dozens of weekends through the year, traveled around the US delivering 90-minute technology training sessions on various topics, including XML (e.g., RELAX NG, XSL-FO), Java (especially Swing), advanced front-end web development (i.e., Ajax), and other topics. Was a top-rated speaker and delivered hundreds of talks over the course of my "tour."

Kicked-off efforts to standardize the organization's approach to Java development (called the "Java common stack"); transitioned to consulting role after six months to pursue other opportunities in parallel and continued to advise closely, at times nearly full-time, for another two years.

Created a pioneering end-to-end publishing platform for doctor authors, including a Java-based GUI editing tool and print-ready PDF publishing platform; also developed an early web-based diagnostic tool for radiologists using what would later be called "Ajax" techniques.

Hired to learn Java and then teach it to others in the development organization; became a noted Java expert, author, and speaker during this period.

Software consulting start-up founded with three others; developed several apps for different clients, including a consumer Windows application in the education space and a Perl-based timecard tracking system for a medium-sized insurance company.

Concurrent with my education and with starting Opsis Group, I provided mostly email support of Unix-based virtual server products. I had never before used Unix; the skills would prove valuable throughout my career.

After two months of USA-based language training, I lived in various parts of southern Chile for 23 months performing missionary-related duties. For 9 months, I concurrently performed administrative duties in support of ~200 other missionaries; for 6 months, I had significant management responsibilities for ~200 missionaries. I learned Spanish fluently.
