Former Global CEO, United Way I Board Director I Impact Investing I Digital TransformationI am the CEO of the Leargas Group, an economic and social impact firm that I founded. The Leargas Group is focused on working with partners on advancing their work in creating social capital in a digital world, racial equity and justice and impact investing.I'm currently working with Humanitas, a tech startup focused on developing artificial intelligence products designed to improve giving and volunteering platforms, including eliminating the inherent biases present in existing systems. I'm also working with the Southern Reconstruction Fund, a private foundation building a fund to invest in restorative and Black-owned capital in the American South.I'm a co-founder of the Abundance Circle; a project housed at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Working with a group of partners, the Abundance Circle is leading a design process to create a multi-stakeholder approach to impact investing. The initiative will bring the worlds of collective social impact and financial investing together through new governance models, the use of new technology, as well as create new financial vehicles and products for investment.I had a long career in United Way. I served as United Way Worldwide's CEO for 19 years. We established new membership standards that required internal consistency and public transparency in financial reporting. United Way changed its mission from one focused on fundraising to measurable community impact. We elevated brand stewardship to the highest priority. In 2008, United Way launched the LIVE UNITED campaign focused on engaging communities in solving social problems. In 2009, United Way Worldwide was created by combining United Way of America and United Way International into a single organization, becoming the largest privately supported non-profit in the world with $5 billion in annual revenue. United Way is now active in 40 countries around the world as a single brand. We built United Way into a digital organization that embraces the power of technology to connect people with causes they care about through initiatives like United Way Digital Services and Salesforce Philanthropy Cloud.As the son of immigrants and the father of two daughters, I am committed to ensuring that every person has the opportunity to succeed in life. A great society shows its greatness by how it treats the least among it. I will continue to work on issues I care about, immigration, racial justice and fighting poverty.
