My research aims to make sustainable water supply a reality for water-stressed regions. Working with Professor Richard Luthy's research group, I seek to understand the role that alternative water supply strategies (such as water reuse, stormwater capture, and storage) can play in resolving the gap between existing water supplies and present and future water needs. I explore barriers and solutions to implementing alternative water supply strategies in the context of real communities and often uncharted regulatory territory. An important part of my work is developing robust yet accessible decision support tools to empower communities in informed, risk-based water supply planning.

Initiated an independent study with Dr. Bridget Wadzuk and Dr. Virginia Smith examining flow behavior through a constructed stormwater wetland. Utilized tracer methods to evaluate the performance of a moveable control gate for real-time dynamic operation. Complemented these tests with a literature review of dynamic, data-driven maintenance programs, a newly developing strategy to minimize annual operations and maintenance cost of green stormwater infrastructure. I presented this work at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering's 2019 CEE Day event and co-authored two 2021 forum papers in the Journal of Sustainable Water in the Built Environment.

Villanova, Pa

Supported water quality testing (solids, nutrients, metals, etc.) and maintenance of stormwater control research sites with the Villanova Urban Stormwater Partnership. Compiled fact sheets detailing the design and performance of 7 research sites to support educational tours. Developed spreadsheet and database protocols for more efficient, reliable analysis of water quality data.

Conducted independent research at University of Nebraska-Lincoln as part of the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. Collaborated with faculty and graduate students within the Departments of Civil Engineering and Biological Systems Engineering.Working with Dr. Xu Li, I analyzed physical and biological metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of solarization treatment as an intervention strategy to reduce antibiotic resistant bacteria in cattle manure stockpiles. Using kriging spatial interpolation in R, I compared monitored temperature data against EPA Part 503 composting regulations. I verified temperature-based models with a culture study enumerating antibiotic resistant and total populations of indicator bacteria.

Philadelphia, Pa

Performed infiltration testing and data analysis for 29 bioswales as part of a maintenance optimization study for the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. Trained field crew members on testing protocols. Quantified canopy coverage using reconstructed aerial photographs of the bioswale sites.Managed work orders for surface watering and subsurface maintenance and inspection of green stormwater management practices within the City of Philadelphia. Tracked photos and field data across three fiscal years to investigate previous installations of pretreatment systems and to anticipate materials demand for the upcoming year. Prepared reference document summarizing special maintenance activities performed over the past five years.Utilized CAD software to draft details, implement client-driven edits, and organize xrefs within plan set drawings for large, multi-phase projects such as DC Water.

Blacksburg, Va

Conducted independent research at Virginia Tech as part of the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. Collaborated with faculty and graduate students within the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation on an ongoing study of hydrologic controls on wetland function at the Great Dismal Swamp.Under the guidance of Dr. Daniel McLaughlin, I developed a project investigating the influence of wetland hydrology on physical and chemical properties of surface peat that indicate its degree of decomposition and influence its vulnerability to smoldering fire. Collected 60 soil samples from 20 locations and analyzed them in the laboratory for bulk density, organic content, and carbon/nitrogen concentrations. Communicated findings through oral and poster presentations at Virginia Tech's Summer Research Symposium, as well as a written report. Co-authored the article "Short- and Long-Term Hydrologic Controls on Smoldering Fire in Wetland Soils" published in the International Journal of Wildland Fire.

Supported the definition and hazard analysis of scope items planned for the 2016 polyethylene plant turnaround. Presented on safety and environmental function of gas flares at Global Safety Day event attended by 800 employees and visitors.
