Hired into the Grand Rapids Fire Department as a recruit firefighter in 1988 after graduating from Spring Arbor College (now University) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Chemistry. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1994, Captain in 2002, and Battalion Fire Chief in 2004. During this time I also became active as a Certified State Fire Instructor through the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council and taught in many programs and schools throughout the state, primarily related to FFI & FFII and Incident Management. In 2006 I became active with the Center for Public Safety Excellence / Commission on Fire Accreditation International where I currently serve as a Peer Assessor evaluating fire departments throughout the country who seek International Accreditation. In 2008 I resigned my post with the Grand Rapids Fire Department to accept the position of Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Brentwood, TN near Nashville. In July of 2011 I was appointed as Fire Chief of the Brentwood Fire & Rescue Department.Specialties: Accreditation Management, Incident Management, Personnel Management, Command and Control, Fire Department Orgainzation, Development of policies, protocols, and procedures.
