About Bharath Ravindran

Bringing together a passion for composite materials and a technical insight developed over years of research, I specialize in biobased composites, manufacturing process and test rig development for strain rates characterization. My journey has led me across Europe—working with academic institutions, industrial partners, and various projects—and has afforded me hands-on technical knowledge from optimizing test methodologies for composite performance in crashworthiness applications to developing sustainable biobased materials, my work is both technical and impactful. As a Research Engineer at the University of Patras - Greece, I was involved in the extensive EU-funded ICONIC project, where I advanced high strain rate testing methods, significantly improving crash test methodologies for transportation materials. This led to enhancements in SHPB testing reliability, pulse shaping, alignment and tensile test, supporting better predictive modeling for real-world applications. I have had the privilege of conducting research across Europe such as Ulster University, Belfast and Centro Ricerche Fiat, Italy where I explored the intricacies of composites manufacturing and automotive crashworthiness. Currently, I serve as a Researcher at Montanuniversität Leoben, I’m deeply engaged in pioneering biobased composite with high potential with repair and recycling, specifically with the QB3R project, where sustainable engineering meets real-world applicability. I’m excited about finding ways to minimize waste, enhance material lifecycle, and support circular economy principles through innovative approaches.Beyond my technical work, I thrive in collaborative environments and have led reporting and project management tasks, ensuring projects hit their targets efficiently. I also enjoy sharing my findings through published articles and conference presentations, contributing to the global conversation on sustainable material solutions.

As a Researcher at Montanuniversität Leoben, I am dedicated to advancing biobased composites within a circular economy framework. My work on the QB3R project focuses on developing sustainable materials with innovative repair and recyclability potential, particularly through biobased resins with vitrimeric functionality. In this role, I actively manage composite processing experiments including repair and recycle contributing to a comprehensive understanding of material sustainability and circularity. In addition to technical work, I take on project management responsibilities, coordinating and ensuring timely delivery of insights and reports. My efforts aim to align our project with strategic sustainability goals, contribute research insights to peer-reviewed publications, presenting at key conferences and collaborating with diverse partner to embed sustainable practices into composite manufacturing processes. Through this blend of technical and management roles, I strive to enhance the environmental footprint and longevity of composite materials, supporting a sustainable future for the field.
  • University Of Patras
    Research Engineer
University Of Patras Mar 2017 - Jan 2021
    Greece
During my tenure with the ICONIC ITN project, supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program, I specialized in high strain rate characterization, focusing on enhancing the crashworthiness of composite transportation structures. My work involved developing and refining Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) testing methods, achieving precise material characterization at dynamic loading conditions. I spearheaded the design and development of new tensile bar fixture and implementing advanced pulse shaping techniques with laser-aligned bar adjustments—achieving greater data accuracy and reduced oscillations. My technical contributions included characterizing high-performance composites like 2D, 3D woven and Uni weave NCF materials, enabling insights into their dynamic behavior and strain rate sensitivity, crucial for understanding impact resilience. These research findings were presented at leading conferences like ECCM,EASN and ECCCS, contributing to state-of-the-art developments in composite testing. My role also involved overseeing technical report submissions to the European Commission, where I collaborated with teams to ensure alignment on progress, timelines, and deliverables. I also led project management tasks as the ESR representative, ensuring that milestones were met efficiently, supporting communication between partners.
  • Centro Ricerche Fiat
    Visiting Research Fellow
Centro Ricerche Fiat Oct 2018 - Nov 2018
    Naples, Campania, Italy
During my research visit at Centro Ricerche Fiat, I had the opportunity to explore the role of composite materials in automotive applications, particularly focusing on crashworthiness enhancement. I engaged in a multi-faceted research approach that included material testing and conducting hands-on experimental evaluations such as stick-slip, lap shear, drop impact, and damping tests. These tests were performed on various composite materials, providing valuable insights into their mechanical properties and performance characteristics. The visit enabled me to develop a comprehensive understanding of crashworthiness by integrating the interplay between materials, testing methodologies, and manufacturing processes
  • Ulster University
    Visiting Research Fellow
    Ulster University Mar 2018 - May 2018
    Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
During my research visit to Ulster University, I had the invaluable opportunity to explore the intricate weave structures of composite materials. Through my time there, I became well-acquainted with the art of composite materials, studying their various architectures and 3D weave designs using specialized software like ScotWeave. Additionally, I gained hands-on experience in the manufacturing process, particularly focusing on Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Moulding (VARTM) and optimizating an appropriate mold for manufacturing laminates with the desired thickness and superior quality. I was actively involved in the processes of fabricating woven composite laminates. This accomplishment was further magnified by subjecting the material to high strain rate testing, the outcomes of which were compellingly presented at the prestigious conference ECCM 2018 in Athens. My visit at Ulster University significantly enriched my understanding of composite materials, weaving techniques, and advanced manufacturing processes, leaving an indelible mark on my academic and professional journey.
  • The Science And Technology Park At The Universitat De Girona
    Research Intern
The Science And Technology Park At The Universitat De Girona Apr 2015 - Sep 2015
    Girona, Spain
During my tenure as a research intern at AMADE udg, I had the privilege of contributing to a significant project that explored the realm of composite structures, focusing on the critical aspect of damage behavior. Over the course of six months, I dedicated my efforts to exploring the insight of "Damage Behaviors of Different Lay-ups of Thin Ply Non-Crimp Fabric (NCF) Laminates". Recognizing the scarcity of experimental studies in this domain, I embarked on an investigation aimed at elaborating the damage resistance and tolerance characteristics of various thin-ply laminates. The study encompassed eight distinct laminate configurations, including four quasi-isotropic, two asymmetric, and two non-symmetric lay-ups. To evaluate the damage behaviour of these structures, I exposed them to low-velocity impacts to gauge their damage resistance. Furthermore, the assessment of damage tolerance involved analyzing compression impact strength (CAI), a crucial parameter in design. Employing the NDT-C-scan method I assessed the extent of delamination, contributing valuable insights to the field. This study laid the foundation for my master's thesis, underscoring my commitment to advancing composite material knowledge.
