Research Intern at imec, Belgium under the project "Photoelectrochemical Charaterization of n-GaN for the application of Water Photoelectrolysis".The aim of this study was to investigate the photoelectrochemical properties of n-type GaN as a photoanode for water photoelectrolysis. Several experiments were performed on n-GaN samples to study the photoelectrochemical properties of n-GaN in different electrolytes (H2SO4, HCl, HBr). The corrosion of n-GaN was found during the photoelectrolysis in the absence of effective sacrificial reagents. The strong reducing agents such as Cl- and Br- are therefore added into the solution to enhance the photostability of GaN. This stability in HCl and HBr was a result of Cl-, Br- oxidation instead of photoanode corrosion. We also studied the effect of solution agitation on the photoelectrochemical behavior of n-GaN. The solution agitation by magnetic-rod-assisting rotation during the photoelectrolysis refreshes the solution at the surface from the bulk. This enables the enhanced supply of reactants at the interface, which improves the photocurrent and the kinetics of the reaction. Moreover, the n-GaN was nanoroughend using chemical etching (heated KOH solution). The enlarged interface facilitates the charge transfer at the interface, resulting in enhanced photoactivity. The electrochemical impedance measurements to study and analyze the Mott-Schottky plot were also performed. The potential of conduction band and valence band of n-GaN obtained from the electrochemical impedance measurement straddles the reaction potential of proton reduction (H+/H2) and water oxidation (H2O/O2), which allows GaN performing photoelectrolysis without external energy input. I also gained experience of working in Cleanroom and Nano materials synthesis, growth and characterization, PVD synthesis systems.
