I signed on with Washington State Governor Gregoire as a cabinet member to help turn around Washington State IT. When I began in this role, there was considerable stress between the executive and key legislators who had a background in the technology industry. There had not been a Strategy created for Washington State IT in more than 20 years and there was little transparency in IT spending and IT policies were irrational and had not kept up with the times.I was a change agent in a situation where morale was low and a turnaround was essential. My office published a strategy in a matter of weeks (http://ofm.wa.gov/ocio/technology_strategy_022312.pdf) and worked with agencies across the State with a budget of around $1B to systematically implement a set of new policies that allowed experimentation with new technologies (Cloud Platforms, SaaS, Technology Business Management etc), helped define and implement new and better procurement policies and made inroads in other areas like security working with a diverse set of agency leaders and IT leaders. I am returning to building products - which is my passion. My experience as an IT leader has likely made me a better designer of products in the future.
