"Evaluation Of Functioning Of Fast Track Courts In India - An Empirical Study" research project was entrusted to the Centre by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India. Fast Track Courts in India are currently set up by the State Governments in consultation with the respective High Court; but they lack legislative backing and well established guidelines. Their performance required a holistic evaluation based on quality as well as by analyzing the factors that affect them. The main premise of this research work was to evaluate the functioning of Fast Track Courts established in 5 States/UT in India (Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal). The Centre's research team along with local field investigators collected data regarding Fast Track Courts through interview & questionnaire modes from court registries, judges, advocates, and litigants. A total of approximately 650 cases were sampled across the 5 States/UT (Approximately 100-150 cases from every state/UT).Prof.(Dr.) G. S. Bajpai, Former Registrar NLU Delhi was the Principal Investigator for this study.
