I provide Nordstrom with trusted, timely, and high-quality data, analytics, and ML services. My responsibilities include the Nordstrom Analytical Platform (NAP) as well as the customer, inventory, and product data planes, an organization of ~350 engineers and TPMs. NAP is a collection of technologies that provides a wide range of data services to different types of users across all of Nordstrom (including business leaders, data scientists, analysts, and engineers). NAP is an event-first, streaming, and near-real-time platform that supports everything from raw source event data through to highly processed insights and machine learning models. The NAP team aims to define, collect, organize, collate, store, and surface the data that runs the business.

I led an engineering and science team working on Whole Page Planning and Optimization. My team tuned and optimized the layout, structure, and content of the Amazon search results page across all devices and locales. We used ML techniques (deep learning, reinforcement learning, multi-arm bandits, multi-variate testing, etc.) that incorporate historical data and context to improve the customer experience with Search. My team also built widgets for the search results page and owned the quality loop for all widgets (defining, tracking, and reporting on whole page quality metrics, and using these to enforce and raise quality and policy standards across the search results page).

I was the single-threaded leader for SageMaker Autopilot - an automatic machine learning workflow that simplifies and automates the entire ML process, building, training, and tuning the best machine learning models based on the customer's data, while allowing them to maintain full control and visibility. I was also leading hyperparameter optimization (a.k.a., Automatic Model Tuning) and SageMaker Reinforcement Learning, and my teams contributed to a number of other research/development areas within AWS, including SageMaker JumpStart, Amazon Elasticsearch ML, AI Devices, Deep Racer, and SageMaker Ground Truth science. I led a team of ~45 developers, applied scientists, and UX designers, spread across Berlin, Seattle, New York, and Vancouver.
