About Bhaskarjyoti Das
- Dedicated my last chapter towards pursuing my passion (;- Now, I am primarily a researcher and I teach because teaching helps me learn and gives me joy. I enjoy grooming young talents and I consider that my way of giving back to the society. As a teacher, I try to go beyond the boundaries of subjects and touch the lives of the students I teach (make them realize the possibilities in themselves, and they often are not aware). - In my research, I am essentially doing Interdisciplinary Machine Learning with humans@ the society in the center. This involves multiple contexts i.e. content, affect, network, user, publisher, temporal and spatial. There is also the hidden context of human mind i.e. why people do what they do ! This is becoming increasingly crucial in modern times. - Having done a full circle back to academics, I have been pursuing PhD (Computer Science ) as a side goal to stay focused though I do not need this degree at this point. In my past professional life, I was a pseudo-academic, i.e., I changed jobs as I always sought new things in a way contrary to how people build careers. So, I thought of removing the "pseudo" part in the last run (;- My past :- Spent 26 years in various roles in different parts of the product value chain i.e. Research, Information Strategy, Professional Services (products) and Software Product Engineering. - Change management and Engineering Program Management to "align Execution with Strategy". There is no dearth of MBAs spewing strategies but it is the Execution where organizations falter (;-- Building competency (Skill, Knowledge and Mindset) in Globally Distributed Software Product Engineering. - Product engineering (Software Projects and Programs) and Quality ( Product, Process and Project quality) - Information Strategy Consulting, Professional services and Business Engineering such as Lean and Six Sigma
Listed skills include Leading Change, Professional Services, Cross Functional Team Leadership, Software Development, and 46 others.

Adjunct Professor
PES University has given me the opportunity to teach, anchor, and create challenging courses that fuel my curiosity and also help me fuel students' curiosity i.e. have been teaching Machine Learning/Machine Intelligence, Natural Language Processing , Social Network Analytics, Data Analytics, Algorithms for Information Retrieval ( essentially Search) , Software Engineering, Machine Learning on Graphs, and Mathematics For Machine Learning. I guide many small research projects (spanning 6 months to one year ) with many bright young minds. While I have been primarily teaching, I am also a researcher here as I enjoy exploring the way the landscape is changing.
Visiting Professor And Phd Scholar
Student - M Tech (Computer Science And Engineering).
Back to school after 25+ years and I did some hands on research. My masters thesis is in the interdisciplinary area of Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Social Network Analysis. It ended up in 4 publications. The work analyses unstructured text reviews , provides visual summary as topic trees (using semantic distance) and detects customer tastes to find taste based implicit networks that are bigger than the explicit ones.

Avp / Head Of India Engineering
The company is floated by Indian entrepreneurs and has web based hosted products around world class content with customers in India, Europe and USA. Unlike most start-ups, it already had revenue, assets, products and customers but had not yet built the engineering DNA for a sustainable product business. Interestingly, growing in the market place is essentially same challenge for all but the big ones may just get to make more attempts/mistakes/can afford to bleed longer while smaller businesses may not get a 2nd chance.Mine was a change assignment i.e. to help refactor the 1.5 million lines platform that the company has built over last 2 years as well as the engineering organization. Led a detailed analysis of the current platform, build vs. buy with open source products such as Liferay and Alfresco, detailed set of SRS and absolute $ value for both options. That helped us decide to refocus on domain app and buy platform vs. building domain apps. The cultural refactoring is the necessary leap from old comfort zone of one off projects to on-going products (=cost of doing product business) and one can't afford to get mixed up between product & service. The dilemma here is between urgent and important. This was my maiden attempt at consulting after a life time as employee in jumbo organizations. Had a peek into the other world (=bottom of the pyramid) so different from matrix-obsessed “cost-centres” of large MNCs and now have the first hand understanding of the challenges of building a product business from India.
Director Engineering
Leading Yahoo! Platform Technology Group's Quality Engineering function at Bangalore. My main assignment is to turn around a large part of this team. This group's responsibility includes various web 2.0 platforms such as Yahoo! Data and Analytics for audience, search behavioral targeting, Yahoo! participation platform and Yahoo! social directory. Turning around a platform Engineering team consists of three steps i.e. 1st part is relatively easy - fixing the process; 2nd part is more difficult - fixing the talent gap, role models and aspirations as, for platform, one really needs deep developers who can test; 3rd is building the culture or dominant behavior of the team by transforming the acquired intellectual capital into social capital of a high performance team. Irrespective of development or test, the web 2.0 is different from let's say web 1.0 in one key aspect i.e the short product release cycle. And this aspect changes everything in product engineering and increases the challenges of any change initiative as boundary between activity and progress gets blurred. Daily release becomes very important whereas the goal of the release gets lost (;- Also a long term change typically brings down the team performance in the short term and in the web 2.0 world of delivery madness, most players do not play for long term goals. Distributed nature of the teams just exponentially increases this complexity.
Director, Distributed Development Framework Program
Distributed product engineering is different from pure offshore model. It is essentially a cost/value constrained optimization problem with several variables such as structure, culture, work partitioning, skill, collaboration maturity etc. Cost includes both the opportunity cost of not doing at mother location and cost of distributed way of work. The Distributed Development Framework Program is a risk management program to ensure that we got enough value i.e. cost of distribution does not make it net negative. This was an interesting change program. This program essentially built on the observed patterns and anti-patterns between the different functions such as Development, QA, Product Management, Marketing, Deployment and the how these anti-patterns got accentuated by the distributed nature of the org. It bench marked each major team on each of these inter and intra-functional inter-relationship and attempted to improve affairs. It's hard for leaders to recognize that they themselves may be part of the problem unless they subject themselves to an objective self-check. In a way it is like doing one's yearly health-check and taking measures if things go wrong. It does reveal gaping issues as a health-check can do for a seemingly confident person. This was also a trust accelerator program as in distributed work, trust is key and this program can help fix the competence (not character) part of the trust. My job involved working with all the Yahoo! business unit R&D organizations that were distributed, to come up with a framework, establish a common report card and help them to improve in a measurable way. This was an international change program that was across India and USA.

Senior Engineering Manager, Sun Portal Server
Built from scratch and managed a large product engineering team for Sun Java Enterprise System Portal Server product at Sun's India Engineering Center. The team did many complete product releases ( Architecture, QA, Development, Documentation, Sustaining, Localization and globalization). It was a distributed engineering model where a very large part of the product suite was owned in India. We started the team when the portal server didn't even hit the main street and the team stayed with it from inception to decline as it gradually became part of the Sun Java Enterprise platform.
