Profile bio

About Brent Daniel

With more than 20 years of experience at IBM, I’ve dedicated myself to constantly learning and evolving. In my career as a Java application server developer (most recently on WebSphere Liberty) I’ve been responsible for implementing technologies in use at the world’s largest companies and critical government agencies. The breadth of the technology involved has given me the opportunity to explore and learn many different languages, operating systems, platforms, tools and frameworks. For the past few years in addition to my development responsibilities I’ve taken on a role working with customers to resolve high visibility production issues. The breadth of my skills allows me to go into a customer engagement and troubleshoot problems whether they’re in the application, server, database, operating system or hardware. I’m focused on solutions. Whether I’m designing and developing new server features or identifying the root cause of production outages in customer deployments, I pride myself on being able to get to the heart of what’s needed. My cross-functional skills have also made me a mentor for team members, acting as a subject matter expert guiding them on component design or just helping to resolve bugs.My career has given me the chance to: ► Land multimillion-dollar client relationships by supporting IBM partners in developing proofs of concept.► Create and implement new features and functions that reached millions of end users.► Act as part of a top-level targeted response team addressing high-priority issues.

Software Engineer

Ibm

Armonk, New York, Ny, Us

For the past several years I've balanced multiple roles. While still working as a core developer for WebSphere Liberty/Open Liberty, I took on an additional job working on high profile support engagements where the traditional support process had failed. In this client facing "SWAT" role I resolved critical customer issues with WebSphere and Open Liberty both on premise and in the cloud across a broad array of operating systems (LInux, AIX, Windows, z/OS.) Problems required debugging across the network, database, JDK and application layers and often involved coordinating across the organization or with third party vendors. I was also reponsible for helping to train technical sales teams and support engineers on Liberty and OpenShift. Selected achievements:► Secured a multimillion-dollar ELA by fixing technical issues with a POC produced by an IBM business partner. ► Ensured an airline's customers could begin flying again after a system outage by tracking down the root cause to a bug in the application's logging framework. ► Produced and ran educational labs for technical sales and support engineers. My other role as a developer was still my primary passion. In that role I designed and developed Open Liberty, a lightweight application server for cloud native microservices. I was primarily responsible for developing features for the Liberty kernel, including the configuration runtime, application manager, and threading model. I also supported teammates across the product as a subject matter expert on Apache Felix Declarative Services. I often took on other projects, such as developing OpenShift "source to image" (S2I) builders and implementing CI/CD pipelines in GitHub actions and Tekton. Selected achievements:► Integrated Open Liberty into the Red Hat OpenShift Launcher by developing Liberty S2I builders and a set of example applications. Worked across organizations to gather requirements. Published images with over 10 million odownloads on docker hub.
